Full Description

The Musikverein and its Brahms Hall

The Musikverein, opened in 1870 and designed by Theophil Hansen, is the base of the Vienna Philharmonic and is famous around the world for the New Year's Concert broadcast from its Golden Hall. Concert-goers who want a Musikverein concert usually want the sound as much as the setting: the halls are prized for their warm acoustics.

The Brahms Hall is the smaller of the main halls, named after the composer Johannes Brahms, who lived in Vienna and had close links to the society. Its intimate scale, ornate ceiling and warm wood make it ideal for Mozart, and no seat is far from the stage.

The Mozart concert and its programme

The two-hour concert is built around Mozart, with overtures, arias and duets from operas such as The Magic Flute and The Marriage of Figaro, along with extracts from his symphonies, concertos and serenades, in the spirit of 18th-century music gatherings. The orchestra, singers and conductor wear costumes and wigs of the Baroque period.

To finish, the orchestra plays two pieces that Austrians call their unofficial anthems, Johann Strauss I's Radetzky March and Johann Strauss II's Blue Danube. It is a Vienna concert that is easy to enjoy even if you do not know classical music well, because the melodies are familiar.

Seating categories: which should you choose?

This ticket comes in four categories. Category C is the most affordable, Category B is a better seating category and the default, Category A is premium, and Superior is the highest-priced and best category. The booking panel shows the current price of each category for adults and children.

In the Brahms Hall the differences are about view and distance rather than the sound. If your budget allows, choose a category closer to the stage to see the singers and soloists in their costumes. Discounts may apply for children and students with valid identification.
