Full Description

Hallstatt, the Lakeside Village of the Salzkammergut

Hallstatt clings to a narrow strip of land between the steep Dachstein slopes and the deep Hallstätter See. Salt has been mined in the mountain above it for about 7,000 years, so long that a whole Iron Age civilisation, the Hallstatt culture, is named after the village. Since 1997 it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape of Hallstatt-Dachstein Salzkammergut.

A day trip to Hallstatt from Vienna is long, but it is the easiest way to reach it without a car. Is Hallstatt worth visiting? For its lanes of wooden houses, the market square, the Protestant church spire on the water and the small Bone House with its painted skulls, most travellers say yes. The best time to visit Hallstatt is early morning or late afternoon, when the day crowds thin out.

The Hallstatt Skywalk Viewing Platform

The Skywalk, known locally as the World Heritage View, is a steel platform that juts out from the mountainside about 350 metres above the rooftops. It is reached by the Salzberg funicular from the southern end of the village, followed by a short walk, and from its tip you look straight down on the church spire, the lake and the Dachstein peaks.

With the default option the Skywalk visit is part of your day, so you do not need to plan how to get to the Hallstatt Skywalk yourself. Allow about an hour for the ride up, the view and the ride down within your free time. The funicular runs on a seasonal schedule and can pause in strong wind or maintenance periods, when our guide suggests the best viewpoints in the village instead.

Schloss Ort on Lake Traunsee

On the way west you stop at Gmunden on Lake Traunsee, the deepest lake in Austria, for about 30 minutes at Schloss Ort. The white lake castle, with medieval origins and a tower rebuilt after a fire in the 17th century, stands on a small island joined to the shore by a long wooden bridge that couples queue to be photographed on.

Schloss Ort is one of the most photographed spots in the Salzkammergut and became famous across Europe through a long-running television series filmed there. Walk across the bridge into the arcaded courtyard, look back at the Traunstein mountain rising from the water and take your photos before the drive continues to Hallstatt.

Crossing the Salzkammergut from Vienna

The trip covers about 600 kilometres by motorway, roughly eight hours of driving in total, west through Lower and Upper Austria. There is a short break at a motorway rest stop on the way out and another on the way back, and your guide uses the drive to explain the history of the salt trade, the Habsburg summer resorts and the lakes you pass.

This Salzkammergut tour from Vienna is designed for people who want to see Hallstatt in one day without driving on mountain roads themselves. Bring water and a snack for the road, sit back in the air-conditioned vehicle and enjoy the change from city streets to forests, farmhouses and lakes framed by limestone peaks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

How much does the Hallstatt day trip from Vienna cost?

The price depends on the option you choose. The booking panel on this page shows the current price for each option, for adults and for children.

Is hotel pickup included?

Yes, with the default option: we collect you from centrally located hotels in postcodes 1010 to 1090. The other options start from our main departure point in central Vienna, and all options end at Albertinaplatz.

How long is the Hallstatt tour from Vienna?

About 13 hours in total, including roughly 8 hours of driving, 30 minutes at Schloss Ort and about 3 hours in Hallstatt.

Is the Hallstatt Skywalk included?

Yes, in the default option and in the second option from the meeting point. The two options without Skywalk give you the same free time in Hallstatt without the funicular ride.

Is the trip suitable for children?

Children aged 3 and over can join, each with their own seat. Keep in mind it is a long day with many hours in the vehicle.

What should I wear or bring?

Comfortable walking shoes, layers for the mountain weather, a camera, water and snacks. Hallstatt's lanes are steep in places and can be slippery after rain.

Can I book for today or tomorrow?

The tour runs daily except 31 December and has no minimum group size. Select tomorrow in the booking panel to see if seats are left; same-day booking is not possible because of the early start.

What is the difference between the options?

You choose between hotel pickup or the central meeting point, and with or without the Skywalk. A special option is for guests celebrating a birthday or a recent wedding, who receive small local gifts on the day and must bring proof of the occasion.

Can I take the boat on Hallstatt lake?

The boat ride is not included, but from May to October you can usually buy a ticket in the village and fit a short crossing into your free time.

Will we visit the Hallstatt salt mine?

No. The salt mine tour takes longer than the free time allows, so we focus on the village and the Skywalk.
