Full Description

The Pyramids of Giza from the desert

The three great pyramids of Giza were built in the Old Kingdom as royal tombs, around 4,500 years ago. The Pyramid of Khufu, the largest, stood about 146 metres high when finished, while Khafre's pyramid still keeps a cap of its original smooth casing and looks taller because it stands on higher ground. The smaller pyramid of Menkaure completes the group.

Seeing them from the open desert, away from the ticket gates and crowds, gives a very different impression. The scale is clearer, the horizon is empty, and a quad ride along the ridge lets you frame them in photographs from changing angles. This is a popular answer for travellers searching for something to do at the Giza Pyramids beyond a standard visit.

Quad bike desert safari near the pyramids

The quad safari takes place in the permitted desert area surrounding the pyramids, not inside the archaeological complex itself, where riding is not allowed. After a short drive from your hotel, your guide explains how the bikes work, provides gear and checks that everyone is comfortable before you set off.

The track crosses open sand and gentle dunes at a pace you choose, from relaxed cruising to quicker sections. Beginners are welcome, and the guide stays with your group throughout. Choose one hour for a taste or two hours for a longer ride. Quad biking near the Giza pyramids is best done in closed shoes and clothes that can get dusty.

The Sphinx and the Giza plateau

Close to the pyramids lies the Great Sphinx, carved from the limestone bedrock of the plateau. It is about 73 metres long and 20 metres high, and is generally linked to the reign of Khafre. The body is a lion and the face a king, and it has watched over the desert for more than four thousand years.

Your private guide can point out the Sphinx and the plateau from the desert viewpoints and explain how the site is laid out, with the three pyramids, the smaller queens' pyramids and the temples around them. An entry ticket to the pyramids area is optional and can be bought on site if you want to go inside the plateau after your ride.

Riding a camel in the Giza desert

Camels have carried people across the Egyptian desert for thousands of years, and a camel ride with the pyramids in view is one of the most traditional experiences in Egypt. The animals are led by their handlers, and the walking pace is slow and swaying, ideal for taking in the view.

The default option includes one hour on a camel after the quad ride, and shorter options of 30 minutes are also listed. A camel ride is a gentle contrast to the speed of the quad, suits children who are not ready to drive, and gives you the classic photograph of camels in front of the pyramids.

Planning your private safari: timing and what to bring

Start times run through the day from 08:00 to 15:00 or 16:00, depending on the option. Late afternoon gives golden light for photographs, while morning is cooler. Allow about three hours in total including the transfers, and a bit longer with a camel ride.

Bring your passport or ID card, sunglasses, a scarf or buff for dust, closed shoes and sun cream. Pregnant women should not take part. Because the safari is private, you can ask your guide for extra photo stops, and our team will help you choose between the one-hour, two-hour and camel options. If you are comparing ways to see the pyramids, this one adds adventure to the history and fits easily around a visit to the plateau itself.
