Full Description

The Saladin Citadel of Cairo

The Saladin Citadel stands on a spur of the Mokattam hills and was begun in 1176 to protect the city from invaders. For about seven hundred years it was the seat of Egypt's rulers, and each dynasty added palaces, mosques and gates inside its thick walls. A private Citadel of Saladin tour lets you read these layers with a guide instead of rushing through them, from the military towers to the courtyards where the sultans held court.

The Citadel also gives the best view of the old city. On a clear day you can look across rooftops and minarets, and on some days all the way to the pyramids on the horizon. Plan to spend about ninety minutes here. Opening hours run from the morning to late afternoon, and the mosques close to visitors at prayer times, which is why our guide plans the order of the visit around them.

The Mosque of Muhammad Ali

The largest building inside the Citadel is the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, often called the Alabaster Mosque. It was built between 1830 and 1848 in the Ottoman style, inspired by the great mosques of Istanbul, with a central dome surrounded by smaller domes and two slender pencil minarets that dominate the Cairo skyline. Its walls and courtyard are covered in polished alabaster, which gives the mosque its soft glow.

Inside, a vast prayer hall opens under a painted dome and a ring of hanging lamps. Visitors remove their shoes and dress modestly, so bring a light scarf or shawl if you prefer. Your guide explains the architecture, the history of the dynasty that built it and the small details most people miss. A private visit also means you can sit quietly for a moment without a large group pressing behind you.

Old Cairo and its historic churches

Old Cairo, also known as Coptic Cairo, is the oldest part of the city and grew inside the walls of a Roman fortress called Babylon. Its narrow lanes hold the Hanging Church, the Church of Saint Sergius and Bacchus, the Ben Ezra Synagogue and the Coptic Museum, set beside the first mosque ever built in Egypt, the Mosque of Amr ibn al-As. Few places show so clearly how Christians, Jews and Muslims have lived side by side in one neighbourhood.

Depending on the day and your interests, your Egyptologist builds the visit around these sites and explains their traditions. The Hanging Church is named for its position above the old fortress gate, and the Church of Saint Sergius is linked by tradition to the Holy Family's stay in Egypt. Expect to spend about ninety minutes; the streets are paved but uneven, and modest dress is expected inside the churches.

Khan el-Khalili Bazaar

Khan el-Khalili was founded in 1382 as a trading caravanserai and is still the best-known market in Cairo. The lanes are lined with brass lanterns, copper trays, silver jewellery, perfume oils, spices, leather and hand-woven cloth, and craftsmen still work in small workshops behind the stalls. The bazaar sits beside the old street of Al-Muizz, where many medieval mosques, gates and fountains survive.

Shopping in Khan el-Khalili is easier with a guide, who can point out what is handmade, suggest fair starting points for bargaining and keep the visit relaxed. Most shops open late in the morning and stay open into the evening, though Friday mornings are quieter. After lunch you can wander on your own for as long as you like, and our driver waits to take you back to your hotel with your purchases.

Planning a full day in Islamic and Coptic Cairo

Visitors often ask whether one day is enough for the Citadel, Old Cairo and Khan el-Khalili. With a private tour from Cairo it is, because everything is arranged around one vehicle and one guide: no queues for tickets, no changing buses and no hunting for parking. The order of the stops can change on the day to suit traffic, prayer times and your own interests.

Lunch is included and gives you a proper break in the middle of the day. The best time to visit these sites is from October to April, when walking between mosques and bazaar lanes is comfortable; in summer, the early start and the air-conditioned vehicle keep the heat manageable. If you want to add the pyramids, ask our team about combining this day with another private tour.
