Full Description

Orange Bay on Giftun Island

About an hour's sail from Hurghada, Giftun Kebir is the larger of the two Giftun Islands, and its western shore holds Orange Bay, one of the most photographed beaches on the Red Sea. Soft white sand slopes into a lagoon of pale turquoise water so clear that you see fish from the shore, and palm-shaded loungers and swings give it a Caribbean feel.

We spend about an hour here to swim, sunbathe and take photos. Visitors often search for an Orange Bay Hurghada trip on its own, but combining it with snorkelling and dolphins makes the most of the day. Bring reef-safe sun cream and water shoes; the sun on the white sand is strong even in winter.

Snorkelling in the Giftun Island National Park

The waters around the Giftun Islands are part of a protected marine park, and the reefs here are among the most accessible from Hurghada. At the snorkelling stop our guide leads you from the boat over coral gardens where you can spot parrotfish, butterflyfish, clownfish in their anemones and, with luck, a blue-spotted stingray resting on the sand.

Masks, snorkels, fins and life jackets are provided, so beginners feel confident, and the guide stays close in the water. Is snorkelling at Giftun Island good for beginners? Yes: the boat moors in calm spots and you can hold a float while you get used to breathing through the snorkel. Allow about 40 minutes in the water.

Dolphin Watching in the Red Sea

Spinner and bottlenose dolphins live in the Red Sea off Hurghada and often gather in sheltered reef areas to rest and socialise. The crew heads for the places where pods are regularly seen, and when dolphins appear the engines are slowed so you can watch them leap and swim alongside the yacht.

If dolphins are present and the sea is calm, you may be invited to slip into the water with your snorkel and see them from a respectful distance. Sightings are common but never guaranteed, as these are wild animals. A dolphin trip from Hurghada is especially popular with children, so keep cameras ready on deck.

Magawish Island and the Sunset Cruise

After a seafood lunch on board, with fish fillet, calamari, shrimp, rice, pasta and salads, the yacht anchors at Magawish Island, a quieter sandy island ideal for a final swim, more snorkelling or simply relaxing on the beach for about an hour.

On the way back the sun sinks over the mountains of the Eastern Desert, colouring the sea gold and pink, and hot drinks and fruit are served as the boat approaches the harbour. It is the perfect finish to a Hurghada island hopping day, and you reach your hotel in the early evening.
