Full Description
The road from Hurghada to Cairo
Cairo lies roughly four hundred and fifty kilometres from Hurghada, and the drive takes five to six hours each way, which is why this Hurghada to Cairo day trip leaves in the middle of the night. Our driver collects you from the hotel at about one in the morning, and you can sleep in the vehicle while it crosses the Eastern Desert and the road toward the Nile Valley, with a rest stop on the way.
You reach Cairo in the morning, before the heat and the biggest crowds, and return to Hurghada late in the evening. It is a long day, about twenty hours door to door in the shared tour, but it is the only way to see Giza without flying or paying for a hotel in Cairo. Bring a light jacket for the early hours and a small pillow if you like to sleep on the road.
The Giza Pyramids and the Great Pyramid
The Giza Pyramids stand on a limestone plateau on the edge of the Cairo suburbs and were built about 4,500 years ago as royal tombs. The Great Pyramid of Khufu is the largest, originally about 146 metres high, followed by the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure and several smaller queens' pyramids. With your Egyptologist you learn how the blocks were quarried and set, how the workforce was organised and why the pyramids face the cardinal directions.
The plateau usually opens in the morning and closes in the late afternoon, and the guide plans around the crowds. The panoramic viewpoint shows all three main pyramids side by side and is the best place for photos. If you want to go inside the Great Pyramid, choose the option that includes the extra ticket; the passages are steep and narrow, so it is not for anyone uncomfortable in tight spaces.
The Sphinx and the Valley Temple
The Great Sphinx is carved from the natural limestone of the plateau, about 73 metres long and 20 metres high, with the body of a lion and a human face usually linked to King Khafre. It sits low beside the causeway, next to the Valley Temple built from huge blocks of limestone and granite. Many people ask whether the Sphinx is worth visiting up close, and the answer is yes, because its scale only makes sense from the ground.
Your guide explains the restorations over the centuries, why the face is worn and how the monument relates to the pyramids behind it. There is time for photos at the viewing terrace, and optional camel or horse rides at the plateau can be arranged on the spot; they are not part of the tour price. Allow about two to three hours for the whole plateau, Sphinx included.
The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square
Opened in 1902 in a pink neoclassical building overlooking Tahrir Square, the Egyptian Museum is the oldest archaeological museum in the region. Its halls hold statues, sarcophagi, jewellery, papyri and everyday objects from across the pharaonic periods, arranged so that you can follow Egyptian history from the Old Kingdom to the Roman era. Your guide selects the pieces that matter, so you see the story rather than rushing through room after room.
In the default option the museum is visited after lunch, with entry tickets included. Opening hours can change, so the guide may adjust the order of the day. The museum is large and can be busy, which is another reason a guided visit is worth having. Photography rules apply inside, and the guide will explain them at the entrance.
The Grand Egyptian Museum and a Nile felucca ride
If you choose the Grand Egyptian Museum option, you visit the large museum beside the Giza plateau instead of the Tahrir museum. It displays the complete Tutankhamun collection and a monumental grand staircase lined with statues, in halls laid out with views toward the Pyramids. The Egyptian Museum and the Grand Egyptian Museum offer different experiences, so ask us if you are unsure which to pick.
The all-inclusive option adds a felucca ride, a traditional white-sailed boat on the Nile, which is a calm way to end the sightseeing before the drive back. These extras are only in selected options, so check the option list in the booking panel and tell our team on WhatsApp which one suits you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private tour?
The default option and most options on this page are shared group tours with other guests. One option is private, with your own guide and vehicle and a flexible pace for your party only. The booking panel shows each option clearly.
Can we change the itinerary or the pace?
On a shared tour the order follows the group programme, though the guide adapts the timing to crowds and opening hours. If you want to set the pace, spend longer at the Pyramids or skip a stop, choose the private option.
How many people can join?
The shared tours run in a small group in an air-conditioned vehicle. For the private option, the vehicle is only for your party; tell us your group size on WhatsApp so we assign the right vehicle.
Is the price per person or per group?
The options on this page are priced per person. The booking panel shows the current price of each option and updates with the date and number of guests.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes, hotel pickup and drop-off in Hurghada is included in every option, at about 01:00. Pickup from Makadi Bay, El Gouna, Sahl Hasheesh, Safaga and Soma Bay can be added when you book.
What is included?
In the default option: hotel transfers, an English-speaking Egyptologist, entry tickets to the Pyramids and the Egyptian Museum, a visit to the Sphinx and lunch. Drinks, tips, camel or horse rides and entry inside the Great Pyramid are not included unless the option says so.
How long is the tour?
About twenty hours door to door in the shared tour, including five to six hours on the road each way. The private option is shorter, about fifteen hours.
Is it suitable for children and reduced mobility?
Children can join if they cope with a very long day in a vehicle. There is a lot of standing and walking on uneven ground at Giza, so the tour is not recommended for guests with serious back problems or limited mobility.
What should I bring?
Your passport or a photo of it, sun cream, a hat, sunglasses, comfortable closed shoes, a light jacket for the night drive and some cash for drinks, tips and optional rides.
What is the best time of day or season?
The early start gives you the Pyramids in the cooler morning light. October to April is the most comfortable period; in summer the plateau is very hot, so bring water and cover your head.
Can I go inside the Great Pyramid?
Yes, in the option that includes the extra ticket. The passages are steep and narrow, so it is best for guests who are comfortable in confined spaces.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose your Cairo day trip option, date and number of guests in the booking panel on this page and send the request. Our team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes and sends the final pickup or meeting details.
