Full Description

Tiran Island and the Strait of Tiran

Tiran Island rises in pale desert cliffs at the mouth of the Gulf of Aqaba, a few kilometres off the Sinai coast. Between the island and the mainland runs the narrow Strait of Tiran, where strong currents carry nutrients from the deep and feed spectacular coral growth. The island itself is protected, so boats stay in the water and do not land.

The sail from the Sharm El Sheikh marina takes about an hour along a coast of beaches and headlands. A Tiran Island boat trip is one of the classic excursions from Sharm, as the scenery of turquoise shallows against dark blue channels is unforgettable. The best time to visit is from March to November, when the sea is warmest.

Snorkelling the Four Reefs of Tiran

Four reefs line the middle of the strait, named Gordon, Thomas, Woodhouse and Jackson after the British cartographers who charted them. On Gordon Reef the rusting hull of the Loullia, a cargo ship that ran aground in 1981, sits high on the reef top and makes a striking landmark. Jackson Reef still holds the remains of another grounded ship.

The captain chooses the two most sheltered sites for the day's conditions. In the water you find coral gardens alive with butterflyfish, triggerfish, groupers and moray eels, and sometimes turtles. Snorkelling at Tiran Island suits beginners and confident swimmers alike, and the instructor stays with the group at each stop of about an hour.

Life on Board and the Intro Dive Option

Between the stops you relax on the sun deck while the crew serves a buffet lunch with hot and cold drinks and unlimited soft drinks and water. The boat has a bathroom and freshwater shower, and life jackets are available for everyone. The protected-area entrance fee at Ras Nasrani, the headland near the airport, is included.

If you want to go deeper, the intro dive option lets beginners try scuba with a professional instructor to a maximum of five or six metres, while certified divers can join a guided dive. A Sharm El Sheikh snorkelling trip to Tiran is a perfect day for families, couples and anyone who wants the Red Sea at its most colourful.
