Overview
This 2.5-hour boat excursion leaves the western seafront of Cannes and follows the wild Esterel coast, where red volcanic cliffs plunge into deep blue water. On a comfortable open motorboat with an English-speaking skipper, you pass the castle of Mandelieu-la-Napoule, the little resort of Théoule-sur-Mer, the jagged headlands of the Esterel calanques and the protected waters of Cap Roux. It is a shared trip for a small number of passengers, ideal for couples, friends and families who want to see a different side of the Riviera from the sea, far from beaches and promenades. Bottled water and life jackets are on board, with morning and early afternoon departures to choose from.

Full Description
Leaving Cannes along the Bay of La Napoule
The excursion starts on Boulevard du Midi, the long seafront west of the Old Port of Cannes, where the beaches face the Bay of La Napoule. Within minutes the boat leaves the city behind: looking back you see Le Suquet, the Lérins Islands on the horizon and the hills of Super-Cannes, while ahead the coast changes colour from green and white to deep red.
Your skipper explains the landmarks as you cruise, starting with the medieval castle of La Napoule standing on the shore at Mandelieu, rebuilt in the early 20th century with towers and gardens by the sea. Mandelieu-la-Napoule is also known as the mimosa town: from January to March the hills behind it turn bright yellow. This first stretch is calm and sheltered, a gentle start before the cliffs.
The Esterel Massif and its red volcanic rocks
The Esterel Massif is a range of ancient volcanic hills between Cannes and Saint-Raphaël. Its rocks, mostly rhyolite formed by volcanic activity around 250 million years ago, owe their striking red colour to iron oxide. From the sea the contrast is spectacular: red cliffs, green Mediterranean scrub and water that shifts from turquoise to deep blue within a few metres.
The coastal road known as the Corniche d'Or winds along the top of these cliffs, but only a boat lets you see the hidden face of the coastline: needles of rock, small caves and coves without any path. If you are looking for an Esterel boat trip from Cannes, this is the quickest way to experience the massif without a car or a long hike, and the light is especially beautiful on the red rock in the morning.
Théoule-sur-Mer and the Esterel calanques
Past Mandelieu, the boat follows the shore of Théoule-sur-Mer, a small resort tucked into the foot of the Esterel, with villas, pine trees and a former soap factory on the waterfront that was turned into a seaside castle. Beyond the village, the coastline breaks into a series of narrow inlets, the Esterel calanques, around the headlands of L'Esquillon and La Pointe de l'Aiguille.
These calanques are among the most photographed spots between Cannes and Saint-Raphaël, with red rocks rising straight from very clear water. Depending on the sea and the season, the skipper may slow down in a sheltered cove so you can take photos or, on calm summer days, enjoy a quick swim; snorkelling gear is not provided, so bring your own mask if you would like to look below the surface.
Cap Roux protected marine area
The highlight of the route is Cap Roux, the great red headland at the heart of the Esterel coast, topped by a peak of more than 450 metres. The waters around it have been a protected fishing reserve since 2003, and the sea life has returned in abundance: groupers, sea bream and seagrass meadows can often be spotted in the clear, deep water below the cliffs.
Seen from the boat, Cap Roux shows how wild this part of the Riviera remains, with almost no buildings, only rock, pines and sea. After time to admire the cape, the boat turns back toward Cannes along the same coast, giving you a second view in different light. Is the Esterel coast worth visiting? For anyone who loves nature and dramatic scenery, it is one of the most striking sights on the whole French Riviera.

It is a shared boat trip with a small number of passengers. The boat, route and skipper are the same for everyone on board.
Can we change the itinerary or the pace?
The route is fixed for all passengers, though the skipper adapts it to the sea and wind on the day. For a fully flexible day on the water, ask us about a private boat.
How many people are on the boat?
It is an open motorboat for a small group, so the atmosphere stays relaxed and everyone has a good view of the cliffs.
Is the price per person or per group?
The price is per person. The booking panel on this page shows the current price for your date.
Is hotel pickup included?
No. You meet the skipper on Boulevard du Midi in Cannes. We can arrange a private transfer from your hotel if you wish.
What is included?
The 2.5-hour boat trip with an English-speaking skipper, bottled water, life jackets and flotation aids. Snorkelling gear and food are not included.
How long is the trip?
About 2.5 hours from departure to return.
Is it suitable for children and travellers with reduced mobility?
Children enjoy the trip and life jackets are provided. Boarding requires a step down into the boat and the ride can be bumpy, so it is not suitable for wheelchair users, pregnant women or people with back problems.
Can we swim during the trip?
When the sea is calm, the skipper may stop briefly in a sheltered cove where a swim is possible. It is not guaranteed, so treat it as a bonus.
What should I bring?
Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, a light jacket, swimwear and a towel, your own snorkel mask, and a waterproof bag for your phone.
When is the best time to go?
May to October offers the warmest sea and calmest conditions. The morning departure gives the best light on the red rocks and usually the calmest water.
