Full Description
Antibes Old Town and the Provençal Market
Antibes began as Antipolis, a Greek trading post founded by sailors from Massalia, today's Marseille, and its old town still sits tight against the sea behind thick stone walls. Your guide leads you through the lanes of Vieux Antibes to the covered Provençal market, where stalls fill each morning with olives, spices, local cheeses, candied fruit and sun-ripened vegetables, and to the ochre façade of the town's cathedral, rebuilt in the 17th century on a site used for worship since antiquity.
About an hour and a half is set aside here, split between the guide's commentary and free time to browse the market and the small craft shops. If you are wondering whether an Antibes day trip from Nice is worth it, this is the answer: the town is compact, authentic and far calmer than its famous neighbours, and the morning visit means you see the market at its liveliest.
Antibes Ramparts, the Harbour and Cap d'Antibes Views
The sea walls of Antibes run along the water's edge and offer one of the finest free viewpoints on the Côte d'Azur: on clear days you look across the Baie des Anges to Nice and, in winter and spring, to the snow-capped peaks of the Alps. Below the walls lies the old harbour, now one of the largest yachting marinas in the Mediterranean, watched over by the star-shaped Fort Carré, a 16th-century fortress built to guard the coast.
Your guide explains how Antibes became a frontier stronghold facing the sea and how the castle on the ramparts was later turned into a museum of modern art (entry is not included and the guide does not go inside, but you can visit during free time). To the south stretches the wooded peninsula of Cap d'Antibes, lined with coves and grand villas, which you glimpse on the way to Cannes.
La Croisette and the Festival Palace in Cannes
Cannes is a short drive along the coast, and the tour pauses on La Croisette, the palm-lined promenade that curves for about two kilometres around the bay, with sandy beaches on one side and grand seafront hotels on the other. At its western end stands the Festival Palace, opened in 1982 and home every May to the world-famous international film festival; you can climb beside the famous red-carpet steps for photos, but the building itself is closed to the public.
This stop includes about an hour and three quarters in Cannes, with free time for lunch at one of the many Mediterranean and seafood restaurants around the Old Port and the Forville covered market. A few halal-friendly restaurants can be found in Cannes, though the choice is smaller than in big cities; your guide can point you to the nearest options.
Le Suquet, the Old Heart of Cannes
Long before the film festival, Cannes was a fishing village clustered on the hill of Le Suquet, just above the Old Port. Its narrow, shaded lanes climb past pastel houses and small restaurants to a medieval watchtower and castle built by the monks of the Lérins Islands, which now house a museum of world cultures. Seasonal market stalls often line the lower streets.
At the top, the terrace beside the hilltop church is the best free viewpoint in Cannes: the whole sweep of the bay, La Croisette, the yachts of the Old Port and, offshore, the low green Lérins Islands, with the red Esterel cliffs to the west. The climb is short but steep, with steps and cobbles, so it is optional; those who prefer can relax in the cafés of the Old Port instead.
Saint-Paul-de-Vence, the Hilltop Village
Saint-Paul-de-Vence is one of the most visited villages in Provence, and for good reason. Perched on a narrow ridge between two valleys, it is still entirely enclosed by its 16th-century ramparts, built to guard the old border with Savoy. Inside, the cobbled main street runs past the arched Grande Fontaine, stone houses covered in climbing roses and dozens of art galleries and craft shops, while the walls themselves give views to the sea and the foothills of the Alps.
The tour ends here on purpose: by late afternoon most day visitors have left, the light turns golden on the stone and the village is at its most peaceful. You have about an hour with your guide and on your own. If you are asking whether Saint-Paul-de-Vence is worth visiting, most travellers count this hour as the highlight of the whole day.
