Full Description
The Elbe and Saxon Switzerland from the water
The Elbe cruise to Saxon Switzerland leaves Dresden upstream, passing the Old Town, the Blue Wonder bridge, the Elbe castles and Pillnitz Palace. The Canaletto view, the skyline painted in the eighteenth century, is best from the river side, and it is the first postcard of the day.
Beyond Pirna the valley narrows and sandstone towers rise on both banks. You pass Stadt Wehlen, Kurort Rathen and the flat-topped Lilienstein, which are the heart of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. The paddle steamer moves slowly, so you have time to enjoy every bend.
Königstein Fortress: the Saxon stronghold
Königstein Fortress stands on a rock plateau about 240 metres above the Elbe and has a history of more than 700 years. Its walls, some 40 metres high, enclose barracks, a garrison church and a well roughly 150 metres deep. The fortress was never taken by force, and it served as a state prison, holding the alchemist Böttger among others.
Today it is a museum and a viewpoint over the valley, so it deserves at least two to three hours. If you are looking for Königstein Fortress tickets and a way to get there, this cruise brings you to the town at the foot of the hill; the fortress entrance fee is not included and you walk up from the pier.
Bastei, Rathen and the sandstone landscape
The Bastei is the most famous rock formation of Saxon Switzerland, a cluster of pillars about 190 metres above the Elbe with a stone bridge built in 1851. It is reached from Kurort Rathen, which the steamer passes. You will not stop there on this option, but the views from the deck give a good idea of the scenery.
The area is a national park and a favourite for walkers and painters, and the day cruise option is aimed at travellers who want to see all of it from the boat. In the summer season the steamer continues beyond Königstein to Bad Schandau.
Choosing your option, tickets and getting back
The default option is a one-way cruise of about 4.5 hours to Königstein; the return journey is not included, and neither is the fortress entrance. Most guests return by S-Bahn train from Königstein to Dresden, which takes under an hour. The second option is a day cruise of about 9.5 hours that turns back at Königstein in the off-season or at Bad Schandau in summer, with no time to visit the stops.
The best time to go is between May and September for the longest days and the fullest service. The timetable can change when the river is extremely high or low. A student or disability card must be shown on the day if it applies to your booking.
