Full Description

The Allianz Arena, FC Bayern's stadium

Opened in 2005, the Allianz Arena is one of the most recognisable stadiums in the world. Designed by the Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, its outer shell is made of nearly 3,000 inflated panels that can glow in red, white or blue. It holds around 75,000 spectators for football matches.

On the Allianz Arena tour you see the stands from close up and, depending on the day's programme, areas such as the dressing rooms, the players' tunnel and the press conference room. The FC Bayern Museum, the largest club museum in Germany, is in the same building and can be visited separately. Stadium tours do not take place on match days.

Munich's old town from the bus

The sightseeing part of the tour takes you through the historic centre, past Marienplatz and the New Town Hall, the twin towers of the Frauenkirche and the Munich Residenz, the palace of the Bavarian rulers. Your guide explains how Munich grew from a monks' settlement into the proud capital of Bavaria.

Driving along Maximilianstraße and past Odeonsplatz, you see the grand boulevards built by the Bavarian kings in the nineteenth century. A Munich city tour by bus is a smart start to a visit, because it shows you where everything is, so you can return on foot later to the places you liked most.

The Olympic Park and the north of Munich

On the way to the stadium, the tour passes the Olympic Park, created for the 1972 Summer Games. Its tent-shaped roof and the 291-metre Olympic Tower dominate the skyline, and the Olympic Stadium was FC Bayern's ground before the Allianz Arena opened.

Nearby stands the futuristic BMW headquarters, shaped like four cylinders. The drive north continues through the district of Schwabing to Fröttmaning, where the arena rises beside the motorway. If you are wondering how to get to the Allianz Arena from Munich city centre, this combined tour takes care of the whole route.
