Full Description

Porto Vromi and the north-west coast

Porto Vromi is a small natural harbour on the rugged north-west coast of Zakynthos, close to the village of Maries, and it is one of the quickest departure points for Navagio Shipwreck Beach by sea. The road down to the harbour winds between hills of pine and olive, and the water at the quay is a striking green-blue.

Because Porto Vromi is a short boat ride from the sights, the cruise spends more time at the caves and swim stops than a long transfer would allow. If you are searching for a Porto Vromi boat trip, note that this option has no bus transfer: you arrive at the harbour yourself, and the meeting point details are in your booking confirmation.

Navagio Shipwreck Beach from the boat

Navagio Beach, known as Shipwreck Beach, is a cove of bright white sand backed by cliffs about 200 metres high. The rusted wreck of the MV Panagiotis has rested on the beach since it ran aground in 1980, and the beach can be reached only by sea, which is why boat cruises are so popular.

On this option you see Navagio from the boat, with time for photos, rather than landing on the beach. It is the best-known photograph in Zakynthos, and the light is often best around midday. If you are wondering how to visit Navagio Beach from Porto Vromi, this cruise is the direct route, and the skipper knows the safest place to stop for a good view.

Blue caves, Hidden Treasure Cave and the Heart Cave

South of Navagio the coast is full of sea caves and arches where sunlight bounces off the white seabed and turns the water a vivid blue. The cruise visits several of them, including Hidden Treasure Cave and the Heart Cave, named for the shape of its opening.

You also pass Poseidon's Profile, a rock formation that looks like a face in the cliff, and other shapes made by the sea. The skipper moves slowly at each cave so you have time to look and take pictures. The Blue Caves of Zakynthos are a top attraction for a reason, and seeing them from a small boat gives you a closer view than from a large one.

Swim stops: Sfogio, White Beach and Porto Steniti

The tour includes three swim stops in some of the clearest water on the island. You may swim at Sfogio Beach, a hidden cove, at White Beach with its pale pebbles and turquoise sea, and at Porto Steniti, a small sheltered spot under the cliffs. The exact stops depend on wind, waves and the day.

Bring swimwear, a towel and sunscreen, as there is little shade at the beach. Food and drinks are not included, so pack water and a snack. The departure times of 12:00, 13:00 and 14:00 suit people who prefer a relaxed start, which leaves the morning free for other plans.
