Full Description
Positano in the evening light
Is Positano worth visiting? Anyone who sees it from the sea at the end of the day will say yes. As the sun lowers, the houses stacked up the ravine turn from white and pastel to gold and pink, the tiled church dome catches the last light and the mountains behind darken to violet. This Positano sunset boat tour is designed to catch exactly that moment.
Your captain welcomes you at the marina by the main beach at about 18:00. The boat first moves slowly along the beach front, so you can take photos of the whole village from the water, something you cannot do from its own lanes. Then it follows the coast, with music playing softly and a cool drink in your hand.
Cliffs, coves and sea caves
West of the main beach the cliffs hide Fornillo, the quieter second beach of Positano, and small coves only reachable by sea. The limestone walls are pierced by caves where the water glows turquoise even late in the day, and the old watchtowers built against pirates still stand on the headlands.
Heading east, the coast passes the little beach of Laurito and continues towards Praiano, a village spread along the ridge, whose lights begin to come on as the sky darkens. The captain chooses the direction according to the wind and the angle of the light, and stops wherever you want photographs or a few minutes of silence. Many guests say this quiet stretch of coast is their favourite moment of the whole stay.
Towards the Li Galli islands
Offshore to the west lie the Li Galli islands, three small islets that ancient legend called the islands of the sirens, whose songs enchanted passing sailors. Silhouetted against the evening sky, with the outline of Capri sometimes visible beyond, they make one of the most beautiful sunset scenes on the Amalfi Coast.
On a calm evening the captain can anchor in a sheltered spot for a final swim. The water in summer stays warm until late, and the boat carries towels and a snorkelling set, with safety equipment for adults and children. Snacks, soft drinks and water are on board, so you can simply relax on the cushions and enjoy the sea.
When to go and how to plan the evening
The best time to visit Positano for a sunset cruise is from May to early October. The departure is at about 18:00: in spring and autumn the cruise coincides with the sunset itself, while in midsummer, when the sun sets later, it is the warm golden hour before sunset, perfect for photographs and pleasant for swimming.
How do you get to Positano for an evening tour? If you stay in the village, the marina is a short walk down the lanes; from Praiano, Amalfi or Sorrento, we can advise on a taxi or private transfer. Back at the marina about an hour and a half later, the restaurants of Positano are just opening for dinner.
