Full Description
Bomerano and the Agerola plateau
The Path of the Gods begins in Bomerano, a hamlet of Agerola, a green plateau at about six hundred and fifty metres above sea level, between the Lattari Mountains and the coast. Agerola has a long tradition of dairy farming, and its fresh cheeses are famous throughout the region. The cooler mountain air and chestnut woods feel a world away from the beaches below.
Your guide meets the group in Bomerano at about 10:00, checks everyone's shoes and water, and explains the route. Starting here is the smart choice: the Path of the Gods from Bomerano runs gently downhill overall towards Nocelle, so the views open up in front of you instead of behind, and the effort is moderate for anyone used to walking.
The trail of the Path of the Gods
The trail, known in Italian as the Sentiero degli Dei, follows an ancient mule track that for centuries linked the hill villages before the coast road existed. Its name comes from the legend that the gods walked it, and when you see it you understand why. The path runs about seven to eight kilometres along the mountainside, sometimes on a ledge with the cliff dropping hundreds of metres to the sea.
Along the way you pass abandoned farmhouses, stone terraces once planted with lemons and olives, and rock shelters where shepherds still keep goats. The surface is mostly rocky and uneven, with some steps and short climbs. Hiking time is around three to four hours at an easy pace with stops, which your guide adapts to the group.
Views over Positano, Praiano and Capri
Is the Path of the Gods worth it? For the views alone, absolutely. From the trail the whole western Amalfi Coast spreads out beneath you: Praiano on its ridge, the bays of Positano, the three Li Galli islands floating offshore and, on clear days, the cliffs of Capri on the horizon. Morning light is especially beautiful, as the sun lights the coast from the east.
Your guide points out the best viewpoints and the plants of the Mediterranean scrub, including wild rosemary, myrtle and broom, and tells stories of the farmers and shepherds who shaped this landscape. The group stops for local products and homemade dishes along the way. Halal food is limited in the mountain villages; tell us in advance and we will ask about vegetarian options.
Nocelle and the way back
The trail ends at Nocelle, a tiny hamlet of Positano perched at about four hundred and forty metres, with a small square, a few houses and a fountain where hikers refill their bottles. From here there are two ways down to Positano: a long stairway of more than a thousand steps through lemon gardens, or a local bus from the nearby village of Montepertuso.
On this tour you can choose the loop route, with a transfer that brings you back to the meeting point in Bomerano, or finish in Nocelle and continue to Positano on your own. Note that the return transfer from Positano is not included if you finish there, so plan your onward journey with our team when you book.
How to get there and the best time to hike
How do you get to the Path of the Gods? Bomerano is reached by local bus from Amalfi in about forty minutes, by taxi or by private transfer, which we can arrange from your hotel on the coast. Arriving the evening before in Agerola is another relaxed option. The meeting point in Bomerano is confirmed after booking.
The best time to hike the Path of the Gods is from March to June and from September to November, when temperatures are mild and the hillsides are green or golden. In July and August the trail is very hot and exposed in the afternoon, so bring extra water. The hike may be postponed in heavy rain, as the rocky surface becomes slippery.
