Full Description

Sirmione old town and the Scaliger Castle

Sirmione sits at the tip of a long, narrow peninsula that reaches about 4 km into the southern part of Lake Garda. You enter the old town across a drawbridge guarded by the Scaliger Castle, a rare water fortress of the thirteenth century whose walls rise straight from the lake and enclose a small fortified harbour. Inside, the lanes are lined with pastel houses, gelato shops and flower-filled balconies.

Is Sirmione worth visiting? It is one of the most charming villages in northern Italy, and your free time here is perfect for a stroll to the lakeside promenade, a look at the castle walls and lunch with a lake view. Halal food is limited in Sirmione, but vegetarian dishes, pizza and lake fish are easy to find, and your tour leader can point out good places.

Boat cruise around the Sirmione peninsula

The highlight of the Lake Garda part is the boat cruise around the peninsula, on a boat reserved for the tour group. From the water you see the castle from its best angle, the elegant villas hidden among olive and cypress trees, and the long flat rocks at the tip of the peninsula, where the water turns a bright Caribbean turquoise over pale limestone shelves.

The boat also passes below the Grottoes of Catullus, the ruins of a vast Roman villa built on the headland around two thousand years ago, the largest of its kind in northern Italy. Nearby, a hot sulphur spring bubbles up from the lake bed and feeds the spa town's thermal baths. The cruise lasts about 30 minutes, and the light on the water is a photographer's dream.

Verona Arena and Piazza Bra

From the lake it is a short drive to Verona, a city on the Adige river whose whole historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your guided stroll begins at Piazza Bra, the largest square in the city, lined with cafés and elegant palaces, and dominated by the Arena, a Roman amphitheatre built in the first century AD that is one of the best preserved in the world.

The Arena once held tens of thousands of spectators and is still used today for a famous summer opera festival under the stars. Entry tickets are not included, but you can visit inside during free time if you wish. Your tour leader explains the Roman origins of the city, its medieval rulers and how the old town grew inside a loop of the river.

Piazza delle Erbe and the balcony courtyard

Through the elegant shopping street of Via Mazzini you reach Piazza delle Erbe, built on the site of the Roman forum and still the lively heart of Verona, with market stalls, frescoed houses, a marble fountain and a tall medieval tower rising above the rooftops. Just behind it lies Piazza dei Signori, quieter and surrounded by noble palaces.

A few steps away is the medieval courtyard with the famous stone balcony, linked to the city's best-known love story and visited by travellers from around the world. The courtyard can be seen from the entrance; access to the house and balcony needs a separate ticket. How to get to Verona from Venice? By high-speed train in about 1 h 15, but this day trip from Venice adds Lake Garda without any planning.

Lake Garda and the drive from Venice

Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy, stretching from the flat, gentle south near Sirmione to the steep mountains of the north. The southern shore, where this tour stops, is the warmest and greenest part of the lake, with olive groves, beaches and lemon trees thriving in a mild climate that feels almost Mediterranean.

The coach journey from Venice to Sirmione takes about 2 hours, crossing the Veneto plain past Padua and Vicenza, with the Alps on the horizon on clear days. Your tour leader uses the time to introduce the places you will see, and headsets let you follow every explanation comfortably. The best time to visit Lake Garda is from April to October, when the boats run daily and the promenades are full of life.
