Full Description

Gardone Riviera: the elegant western shore

Gardone Riviera grew in the late nineteenth century into one of the most refined resorts on Lake Garda, thanks to a remarkably mild climate sheltered by the mountains behind it. Palms, cedars and citrus trees line its lakeside promenade, grand old hotels and villas look out over the water, and a hillside botanical garden displays plants from every continent.

How to get to Gardone Riviera? It lies on the western shore, about 1 h 15 by road from Verona airport and around 30 minutes from Desenzano, with public lake boats calling at its pier. Arrive a little early to stroll along the waterfront before boarding. The cruise starts and ends on the lakefront, so it is easy to combine with lunch or dinner in the village.

The bay of Salò and the western shore

Leaving Gardone, the boat follows the western shore south into the wide, sheltered bay of Salò, one of the most beautiful stretches of the lake. Salò itself has one of the longest lakeside promenades on Lake Garda, lined with arcaded houses, a late-Gothic cathedral and colourful facades, and for centuries it was the main town of the western shore.

Behind the bay, green hills covered in olive groves and cypresses rise towards the mountains of the Alto Garda park. From the water you see how villas and gardens cascade down to the shore, and the evening light makes the whole coast glow. Your skipper knows the best angles and can slow down or pause whenever you want to take photos.

Isola del Garda

Isola del Garda is the largest island on the lake, about 1 km long, lying just off the headland of San Felice del Benaco. A monastery stood here in the Middle Ages, and today the island is crowned by an elegant villa in Venetian neo-Gothic style, completed in the early twentieth century, surrounded by English and Italian gardens that descend in terraces to the water.

The island is still privately owned, and landing is not part of this cruise, but the view from a private boat is magical: the skipper circles slowly along its shore so you can admire the pale facade, the balustrades and the tall trees reflected in the lake. Is Isola del Garda worth seeing from the water? It is one of the most photogenic sights of Lake Garda, and at sunset it is truly unforgettable.

Sunset or morning on Lake Garda

The 17:00 departure is timed for the golden hour: depending on the season, the sun sinks behind the hills of the western shore or lights up the slopes of Monte Baldo opposite, turning the water silver, gold and pink. It is the most romantic moment of the day on the lake, and a private sunset cruise on Lake Garda is a lovely way to celebrate an anniversary or a family occasion.

If you prefer, the 10:00 departure offers calm water, soft light and a quieter lake. The best time to visit Lake Garda for a boat cruise is from April to October; in spring and autumn the sunset comes earlier, so the 17:00 cruise catches the last light, while in summer it shows the warm glow of late afternoon. Either way, the hour passes gently with nobody but your own group on board.
