Overview
This shared boat cruise is the quickest way to see the whole Sirmione peninsula from the water. In about 25 minutes the boat leaves the harbour beside the Scaliger Castle, follows the shore past lakeside villas and gardens, rounds the tip below the Grottoes of Catullus and the pale rock slabs of Jamaica Beach, then returns to the jetty. The captain gives live commentary in Italian and English. Departures are usually late morning and late afternoon, so the cruise fits easily into a day in Sirmione before or after visiting the castle. It suits families with children, couples and anyone who wants the classic view of Sirmione without a long boat trip.

Full Description
Sirmione peninsula and its harbour
Sirmione sits on a narrow strip of land about four kilometres long that reaches into the southern end of Lake Garda. The old town fills the end of the peninsula, entered through a single gateway beside the castle, and its lanes are mostly closed to traffic. The small harbour where this cruise starts is right next to the castle walls, a few steps from the main square.
Many visitors ask how to get to Sirmione: the nearest railway stations are Desenzano del Garda and Peschiera del Garda on the Milan–Venice line, each about fifteen to twenty minutes away by bus or taxi, and public lake boats also stop here. Verona airport is about forty minutes by road. Allow at least half a day for the town so the 25-minute cruise, the castle and a stroll to the headland all fit comfortably.
The Scaliger Castle from the water
The Scaliger Castle, or Rocca Scaligera, was raised from the thirteenth century by the della Scala lords of Verona to guard the southern lake. It is one of the best preserved water castles in Italy: moats surround it on all sides, a drawbridge leads into the old town, and its fortified dock, built in the fourteenth century to shelter the lords' fleet, still holds water today.
From the boat you see the battlements and the tall keep rising directly out of the lake, the view that appears on most photographs of Sirmione. Inside, a climb up the tower gives a wide panorama over the rooftops and the water. The castle is usually closed on Mondays, so check its opening hours if you plan to visit after the cruise.
The Grottoes of Catullus and Jamaica Beach
At the very tip of the peninsula stand the Grottoes of Catullus, the remains of a grand Roman villa built between the late first century BC and the early first century AD. It is the largest Roman villa site in northern Italy, with vaulted halls, terraces and long corridors spread among old olive trees on the headland. The name 'grottoes' comes from the collapsed rooms that looked like caves to later visitors.
Below the ruins, smooth limestone slabs slope gently into shallow turquoise water. Locals call this stretch Jamaica Beach, and from the boat its colours stand out clearly against the deep blue of the lake. Is the site worth visiting on foot as well? Yes: the archaeological area and its small museum take about an hour and a half, and the cruise shows you the headland first from below.
Lake Garda and the thermal waters of Sirmione
Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy, about fifty kilometres long and more than three hundred metres deep at its deepest point. Its southern basin around Sirmione is wide and open, with gentle hills behind the shore, while the northern end narrows between steep mountains. On clear days the long ridge of Monte Baldo is visible to the north-east from the boat.
Sirmione is also a spa town: hot sulphurous water rises from a spring in the lake bed off the peninsula and feeds the town's thermal baths. The mild climate lets olive and lemon trees grow along the shore. The best time to visit Sirmione is from April to June and in September and October, when the lake is calm and the town is less crowded than in August.
