Full Description

Positano and its panoramic viewpoints

Positano is best admired from above, and that is where this Fiat 500 tour from Positano begins. After picking you up at your hotel, your driver climbs the winding roads to the panoramic bends of the Amalfi Drive, where the whole village appears as a cascade of pastel houses down to the sea, with the majolica-tiled dome of the church at its heart and the Li Galli islands offshore.

These viewpoints are hard to reach on foot and dangerous to stop at in a normal car, but your local driver knows exactly where to pull over safely. With the soft top rolled back and the little car in the foreground, these are the photos that guests remember most; your driver takes them for you, so everyone in your party is in the picture.

Praiano, the village on the ridge

A few kilometres east of Positano, Praiano spreads along a ridge between the mountains and the sea. It was once a fishing and silk-making village and remains quieter and more authentic than its famous neighbour, with steep lanes, a church square paved with colourful tiles and terraces of lemons and olives.

Praiano faces west, so it is famous for some of the best sunsets on the Amalfi Coast, which makes the late-afternoon departure particularly beautiful from spring to autumn. Below the village, the little beach of Marina di Praia sits in a narrow inlet between rock walls. The best time to visit Praiano is from April to October, when its terraces and gardens are at their greenest.

The fjord of Furore

Is Furore worth visiting? It is one of the most spectacular sights on the coast. The village itself is scattered across the mountainside with no real centre, and is known as the town that does not exist; many of its walls are decorated with murals painted by artists over the years. Down by the sea lies the famous fjord, a deep, narrow cleft where a stream reaches the Mediterranean.

The coast road crosses the fjord on a single high arch bridge, with a tiny pebble beach and the old fishermen's houses directly below. How do you get to Furore? By car or bus along the Amalfi Drive, though stopping on the bridge is tricky; with your private driver you can pause nearby and walk to the parapet for the view.

Conca dei Marini and the Emerald Grotto

Just beyond Furore, the road reaches Conca dei Marini, a former seafaring village whose white houses tumble down a headland crowned by an old watchtower. It is a peaceful spot, known for its views over the Gulf of Salerno and for a traditional pastry filled with cream and black cherries created in a local convent.

Below the road lies the entrance to the Emerald Grotto, a sea cave where sunlight filtering through an underwater opening turns the water a vivid green. On this short tour you see it from the coast road, where your driver can point out the lift and stairs that lead down to it, in case you would like to return and visit the cave another day.

Amalfi as an option, and practical tips

When traffic and time allow, the tour can continue to Amalfi, the old maritime republic that gave its name to the coast, for a glimpse of its harbour and cathedral before the drive back to Positano. In high summer the coast road is busy, so your driver will tell you on the day whether Amalfi fits comfortably within the two hours.

The car is a genuine 1960s classic with no air conditioning, which is part of its charm: with the roof open you feel the sea breeze and the scent of lemons. Bring sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen, and avoid large bags, as space is limited. The tour is not suitable for guests taller than about 180 centimetres or with back problems.
