Full Description

The Ouzoud Waterfalls in the Azilal countryside

The Ouzoud Waterfalls, called Cascades d'Ouzoud on road signs, are the best-known waterfalls in Morocco and one of the most rewarding day trips from Marrakech. The river drops about 110 metres in several steps over a red sandstone cliff into a green gorge, and in the afternoon sun the spray often throws a small rainbow across the pool.

Most visitors ask whether the Ouzoud Waterfalls are worth the long drive from Marrakech, and the answer is yes if you enjoy scenery and fresh air: this is a green, cool valley after the dry plains around the city. The best time to visit Ouzoud Falls is spring, from March to May, when the flow is strongest and the hills are green. Summer is hotter but the shade by the water is welcome, and in winter the falls are full after rain.

Boat ride and walk at the foot of the falls

The most fun part of any Ouzoud Waterfalls tour is the boat ride. In the guided options, small traditional boats take you out to the spray at the base of the cascade, a short trip that lets you feel the power of the water and take photos from a point most walkers never reach. A local mountain guide leads the way down the stepped path from the top viewpoint, shows you the best spots and keeps the group together.

The walk itself is moderate: steps and rocky paths with a fair number of stairs on the way back up. Allow around two to four hours at the falls depending on your option. If you choose the self-guided option, you have free time to explore at your own pace, and the guide and boat can usually be arranged on the spot, subject to availability.

Barbary macaques and the olive groves

A troop of Barbary macaques lives along the trails around Ouzoud, the only wild monkeys in North Africa. They are used to visitors, but they are still wild animals, so keep your distance, do not feed them and hold bags and snacks close. Seeing them jump between the rocks and trees is a highlight for children.

Above the falls the path runs through olive groves and past small watermills built along the river, a quiet side of rural Morocco that you do not see in the city. The drive from Marrakech takes around three hours each way with a coffee break, and our guides stop for photos where the road crosses open countryside, so the journey is part of the day and not just a transfer.

Lunch with a view and your day trip from Marrakech

In our most complete option, lunch is served at a restaurant overlooking the falls, and dietary needs such as vegetarian meals can be arranged. With the other options lunch is not included, and you can buy a meal at the cafes and restaurants near the falls instead. If you are searching for an Ouzoud Waterfalls day trip from Marrakech with lunch and a boat ride, this is the option that bundles it all.

Pickup starts from about 07:30 from your hotel or riad in Marrakech, and the return reaches the city around 19:00. If your riad is deep in the medina where vehicles cannot enter, we arrange a nearby meeting point a few minutes away. The tour is a long day, so wear comfortable shoes, bring a hat, sunscreen and a swimsuit if you want to cool off in the warm months.
