Full Description

Chefchaouen, the blue town of the Rif Mountains

The first part of the day is a guided visit of Chefchaouen, a hillside town at about 600 metres where houses, steps and doorways are washed in shades of blue. Founded in the fifteenth century as a fortress and later settled by Muslims and Jews from Andalusia, it combines Moroccan and Spanish influences in its architecture. For many travellers it is the best day trip from Tangier, and the morning is the quietest time to see it.

Your local guide leads you through Uta el-Hammam square, past the old kasbah and the Great Mosque with its octagonal minaret, and into the lanes where craftspeople sell woven blankets, leather and jewellery. Then you have free time for lunch and tea before heading to the mountains.

The Jewish quarter and the souks

A short way from the jewellery souk is the old Jewish quarter, where the lanes narrow and the blue deepens. It is one of the calmest parts of town and a good place to hear how different communities shaped Chefchaouen, from its cooking to its crafts and its colour tradition.

The souks are busy and colourful, ideal for souvenirs such as local wool, soap, spices and ceramics. Your guide can suggest where to buy and how bargaining usually works. Carry a little cash, because many small stalls and cafés do not take cards.

Akchour and Talassemtane National Park

Akchour is a village about thirty minutes by road from Chefchaouen, at the gateway to Talassemtane National Park. A river runs through a green gorge here, with pools, limestone cliffs and woods of pine and cork oak. Many people ask whether the Akchour waterfalls are worth the trip: yes, especially in spring and early summer, when the flow is strongest, although water levels drop later in the season.

A second local guide meets you for the hike. The path follows the river, sometimes along rocks and roots, and leads to the small waterfalls, where you can rest, take photographs and, in warm weather, cool your feet in the pools. The whole stop takes about an hour and a half to two hours, depending on the pace of the group.

The hike and God's Bridge

The hike at Akchour is moderate: a gentle start followed by uneven sections, with short climbs and stream crossings. Sturdy shoes make a real difference. The guide chooses the route according to the group's pace, the time left and the conditions on the day, and the focus is the small waterfalls rather than the longer trek to the larger falls.

God's Bridge is a natural rock arch that spans the gorge farther up the valley, and it is the best-known sight at Akchour. Reaching it needs more time than a day tour normally allows, so ask your guide on the day whether it fits your schedule. In summer the trail is busy at weekends, and an early start is best for the cooler temperatures.

The route: Tangier, Chefchaouen and back

This is a long day, around eleven and a half hours, with a lot of road. You leave Tangier around 9:00, break for coffee or tea in the mountains, spend several hours in Chefchaouen, travel to Akchour, and drive back to Tangier in the evening in a comfortable people carrier with a professional driver.

The combination of town and mountains makes this one of the most rewarding Chefchaouen excursions from Tangier, but it suits travellers who enjoy being active. If you prefer a gentler day, a Chefchaouen-only tour or a day combining Chefchaouen and Tetouan may fit better.
