Full Description

The Royal Palace on Dam Square

The Royal Palace stands on Dam Square, in the centre of Amsterdam, opposite the New Church. It was built between 1648 and 1655 as the city hall, at a time when Amsterdam was one of the richest cities in the world, and its architect Jacob van Campen designed it to show the city's wealth and power. If you are searching for Royal Palace Amsterdam tickets, this one includes the multimedia guide.

The building became a royal palace in the early nineteenth century under Louis Napoleon, and it is still used today for state visits, award ceremonies and receptions. Because of these official events, the palace can close at short notice, so check the dates shown in the booking panel.

The Citizens' Hall and Atlas

The great Citizens' Hall is the heart of the palace: a vast marble chamber, almost thirty metres high, whose floor is inlaid with maps of the world and the night sky. It was designed as a symbol of the city's place at the centre of the world, and it still impresses visitors today.

Above the pediment, the statue of Atlas carries the sky on his shoulders. Sculptures by Artus Quellinus and his workshop cover the walls, and allegorical figures tell the story of the city's power. Spend time on the floor maps and the ceiling.

Golden Age art and the royal rooms

The state rooms hold masterpieces of Dutch Golden Age art, including paintings by Ferdinand Bol and Govert Flinck, both pupils of Rembrandt, and other sculptures and works chosen for their link to the city and the state.

You also see the beautifully preserved furniture, chandeliers and clocks from the time of Louis Napoleon, in the Empire style, which give an idea of how the rooms looked when the palace was a royal residence. The multimedia guide explains the history of each room as you walk.
