Full Description
The Van Gogh Museum on Museumplein
The Van Gogh Museum opened in 1973 in a building designed by Gerrit Rietveld, with a modern exhibition wing added in 1999. It stands on Museumplein next to the Rijksmuseum and the Stedelijk Museum, in Amsterdam's museum district. The collection came from the artist's brother Theo and his family, and the museum keeps it as a permanent record of his life.
For a Van Gogh Museum visit, book a time slot in advance because tickets are sold online only and the museum is one of the most popular in the Netherlands. Tram 2 and 12 stop at Van Baerlestraat, a short walk away, and Amsterdam Centraal is about fifteen minutes by tram.
Sunflowers, Almond Blossom and the major paintings
The heart of the museum is the paintings that made Van Gogh famous: Sunflowers, painted in Arles, Almond Blossom, made for his newborn nephew, and the dark, powerful Potato Eaters from his early Dutch period. The layout follows the years of his life, so you see how his palette moved from earthy browns to intense colour after he discovered Paris and the south of France.
Every visitor who asks whether the Van Gogh Museum is worth visiting quickly understands why: seeing the brushwork in the flesh, with thick paint standing off the canvas, changes how you see the artist. Give the paintings on the first floor most of your attention.
Letters, drawings and the story behind the art
The museum holds more than seven hundred fifty letters written by Van Gogh, mostly to his brother Theo, and they explain his ideas, his doubts and his ambitions. Extracts appear on the walls beside the paintings, which makes the visit feel like a conversation with the artist.
There are also about five hundred drawings, sketchbooks and Japanese prints that he collected. Small exhibitions explore his contemporaries, such as Gauguin and Toulouse-Lautrec, and the museum organises temporary exhibitions each year that are included in the ticket.
Which option to choose and how to plan your visit
You can choose a timed entry ticket with a handheld audio guide, available in many languages, or a ticket without an audio guide. Choose the audio option if you want the stories behind the works. Note that the museum does not recommend the audio guide for children aged twelve and under.
Mornings from nine until eleven and after three in the afternoon are the quietest times, while late morning and early afternoon are busiest. The museum is open every day of the year. Bring your voucher on your phone and arrive a little before your slot; hotel pickup and a live guide are not included.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
How much does a Van Gogh Museum ticket cost?
It depends on the option and the date. The booking panel on this page shows the current price for each option, for adults and for children.
Is hotel pickup included?
No. This is an entrance ticket only. Tram 2 and 12 from Amsterdam Centraal stop near the museum.
How long does a visit take?
Most visitors spend around two hours. Add time if you use the audio guide and read the letters carefully.
Is the museum suitable for children?
Yes. Children aged seventeen and younger have their own category. The museum has a family route, although it does not recommend the audio guide for those aged twelve and under.
What should I wear and bring?
Comfortable shoes and a light layer. Bring your voucher on your phone; large bags are best left at the cloakroom.
Can I book for today or tomorrow?
Often yes, subject to availability. Choose your date and time slot in the booking panel.
What is the difference between the two options?
Both give timed entry to all permanent and temporary exhibitions. One also includes a handheld audio guide; the other is entry only.
Is the Van Gogh Museum worth visiting?
Yes. It is the best single place to understand Van Gogh's life and work, and it is easy to combine with the Rijksmuseum on the same day.
What is the best time to visit?
Early morning from nine to eleven, or after three in the afternoon, gives more space in front of the paintings.
