Overview
This Panama Canal tour takes you from Panama City across the isthmus to the Atlantic side of the canal, where you watch ships pass through two very different sets of locks. At the Agua Clara Visitor Centre you look over the new expanded locks, opened in 2016 for the largest ships ever to cross Panama; then you visit the historic Gatun Locks, built in 1914. An English and Spanish-speaking guide explains how it all works, and bottled water, snacks and fresh fruit are provided. It is a shared tour in an air-conditioned vehicle, with pickup from city hotels, apartments and Playa Bonita at 08:00 and a return about 6 hours later. Visitor centre entrance is paid on site.

Full Description
Agua Clara Locks and Visitor Centre
The Agua Clara Locks are the Atlantic half of the Panama Canal expansion, opened in June 2016 after nine years of construction. Each of their three chambers is 427 metres long and 55 metres wide, big enough for the Neopanamax ships that carry around three times the cargo of the vessels the original canal was designed for. Instead of swinging gates they use huge rolling gates, and nine water-saving basins beside the chambers recycle most of the water used in each lockage.
The visitor centre sits on a hill above the locks, with an open terrace that looks straight down on the chambers and out across Gatun Lake. From here you watch a ship the size of a skyscraper being lifted, chamber by chamber, by tugboats and water alone. This Agua Clara Locks tour is timed so that you see ships crossing, and your guide explains every stage as it happens.
Gatun Locks, the historic gateway from the Atlantic
A short drive away stand the Gatun Locks, part of the original canal opened in 1914. In three consecutive steps they lift ships about 26 metres from the Caribbean entrance up to Gatun Lake, and when they were built they were among the largest concrete structures on Earth. The twin lanes, steel mitre gates and electric locomotives known as mules that guide ships with cables still work much as they did more than a century ago.
Standing beside the chambers, you are only metres from the hulls, close enough to hear the engines and watch the line handlers at work. Comparing Gatun with Agua Clara shows how much shipping has grown. Is Gatun Locks worth visiting? For anyone interested in the canal, seeing old and new locks side by side is the best way to understand it, and one visitor centre ticket covers both sites.
Across the isthmus to the Atlantic side
The Panama Canal links two oceans only about 80 kilometres apart, and on this Panama Canal day trip from Panama City you cover that distance by road. The drive follows the expressway north through green hills and forest to the Caribbean coast near the city of Colón, taking around an hour and a half each way depending on traffic. Along the way your guide talks about the railway that first crossed the isthmus in 1855, decades before the canal.
Colón grew up around that railway and later the canal, and today its port is one of the busiest container hubs in Latin America. You will see ships waiting at anchor in Limón Bay before entering the locks. The return journey takes you back to Panama City in the early afternoon, about 6 hours after pickup, leaving the evening free.
Why the Atlantic side is worth the trip
Most visitors only see the canal at Miraflores, close to Panama City. The Atlantic side is quieter, the viewing points are less crowded, and it is the only place where you can watch both the expanded locks and the historic locks in a single morning. Ships transiting the canal pass through here every day, so there is a very high chance of seeing large vessels moving through the chambers during your visit.
Your guide also explains the canal expansion, the water management of Gatun Lake and the daily life of the waterway, from pilots to tug crews. The tour runs in all weather, and the rainy season brings dramatic skies over the lake. Visitor centre tickets are bought on site and one ticket covers both locks, so you do not need to buy Panama Canal tickets in advance; we simply recommend carrying cash or a card for the entrance.

No. You buy one visitor centre ticket on site that covers both Agua Clara and Gatun, and your guide helps you at the entrance.

Yes for children, who usually love the ships. The viewing areas are mostly flat, but there are some steps and slopes, so message us if you need assistance.
What should I bring?
Cash or a card for the entrance, ID, sunscreen, a hat, a camera and a rain jacket in the wet season.

What happens in bad weather?
The tour runs rain or shine. The visitor centres have covered areas, and the canal keeps working in the rain.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose your date in the booking panel and send your request. Our team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes and asks for your pickup address.
Is this better than visiting Miraflores Locks?
It is different: on the Atlantic side you see the new expanded locks and the historic locks in one trip, with fewer crowds than at Miraflores.
