Full Description

Adrspach Rock City and the Adrspach-Teplice Rocks

Adrspach Rock City is the northern half of the Adrspach-Teplice Rocks, a national nature reserve in north-east Bohemia, just across the border from Poland. The sandstone here was laid down on the floor of a shallow sea roughly 90 million years ago, then lifted, cracked and carved by frost, wind and water into thousands of pillars, walls and needles. The result is a true labyrinth of stone, with towers that rise up to about 100 metres above the forest floor.

Is Adrspach worth visiting? For anyone who loves landscapes, absolutely: it feels like walking through a city built by nature, and it is very different from the castles and old towns that fill most itineraries in the region. Our Adrspach rock city tour takes care of the drive and the entry ticket, so you simply arrive at the gate and start exploring.

The rock labyrinth trail: towers, gorges and narrow passages

From the entrance, the main circuit runs for about 3.5 kilometres along wooden walkways, steps and sandy paths. Early on you pass through the Gothic Gate, a stone portal at the start of the rock maze, then the trail winds between giant formations whose shapes have earned them names such as the Mayor and his Wife, the Jug and the Sugar Loaf. In places the walls close in so tightly that only a thin strip of sky shows above.

The narrowest section is the Mouse Hole, a slot between two rock faces that you pass sideways, and the deep, shaded gorges stay cool even on hot summer days. Allow around 2 to 3 hours to walk the loop without rushing; there are benches, viewpoints and plenty of corners to stop for photos. Your driver explains the route before you set off and agrees the time to meet back at the vehicle.

The emerald lake and the Great Waterfall

Water is part of the magic of Adrspach. Near the entrance lies a calm, emerald-green lake formed when an old sand quarry filled with water, its surface reflecting pine trees and pale sandstone cliffs. It is one of the most photographed spots in the reserve and a pleasant place to pause before or after the trail.

Deeper inside the labyrinth, the path climbs wooden stairs beside the Great Waterfall, where a stream drops several metres through a narrow cleft in the rock. Above it lies a small upper lake hidden between vertical walls, reached by a staircase cut through the stone. Spring brings the strongest flow, autumn adds golden forest colours, and in winter frozen water and snow turn the scene silver, so the rocks, lake and waterfall look beautiful in every season.

From Wroclaw through Lower Silesia to the Broumov Highlands

Many visitors ask how to get to Adrspach from Wroclaw without a car. Public connections need several changes, which is why a direct small-group transfer is the easiest choice: the drive covers roughly 130 kilometres and takes about 2 hours each way, through the farmland and rolling hills of Lower Silesia and over the border near the Sudetes mountains.

Adrspach sits in the Broumov Highlands, a protected landscape of forested ridges, sandstone tables and quiet villages with timber houses. Because Poland and the Czech Republic are both in the Schengen area there is no border queue, but you should carry your passport or ID card. This Adrspach day trip from Wroclaw is one of the best day trips from Wroclaw for travellers who want a complete change of scenery after the city's market square and bridges.

Best time to visit Adrspach and practical tips

The reserve is open all year. The best time to visit Adrspach is from late April to October, when the trails are dry and the forest is green; weekday mornings are calmer than weekends. In summer the site can be busy, so arriving with a ticket already arranged saves time at the gate. In winter some stairs can be icy and parts of the route may be shortened for safety.

Wear sturdy walking shoes with good grip, as the trail includes many steps, sandy sections and wet wooden boards. Bring a light jacket, because temperatures in the gorges are noticeably lower than outside, plus water and a snack or packed lunch, since food is not included. There are small cafes and kiosks near the entrance for a hot drink after your walk.
