Full Description
The Nervión river and the Abando waterfront
Bilbao grew along the Nervión, and the river is still the best way to understand the city. Your cruise starts on the Abando side, close to the Town Hall Bridge and the elegant 19th-century Town Hall, with the Old Town and its Seven Streets just across the water. Within minutes the boat glides beneath the Zubizuri, a curved white footbridge with a glass deck, and along tree-lined promenades where locals walk and cycle.
Seeing these landmarks from the river makes a Bilbao boat tour different from a day on foot: bridges frame the views, and the hills that enclose the city rise behind the rooftops. Among the best things to do in Bilbao on a first visit, this stretch gives you a quick map of the centre, so you know exactly where to return later for a closer look.
The titanium museum and Abandoibarra
The most famous sight on the route is the titanium-clad modern art museum, opened in 1997 on old dockland at Abandoibarra. Its curving silver panels change colour with the light, and from the water you see the full length of the building, the giant steel spider sculpture by the riverside and the tall red arch of La Salve Bridge cutting across its roof line. The opening of this museum turned a declining industrial city into a cultural destination.
Around it, the Abandoibarra riverfront was rebuilt with parks, a library, a university campus at Deusto on the opposite bank and the glass tower that is now the tallest building in Bilbao. If you plan to visit the museum itself, a morning cruise and an afternoon inside fit well into one day; museum entry is not part of this cruise.
Euskalduna and the old shipyard district
Beyond La Salve the boat reaches the Euskalduna Conference Centre and Concert Hall, built on the site of the Euskalduna shipyard. Its dark, rusted-steel walls and angled shape recall a ship under construction, a deliberate tribute to the thousands of workers who built vessels here for most of the 20th century. Next door, the maritime museum keeps a huge red crane from the yard, one of the last reminders of that era.
This is where the city centre ends and the working river begins. The audio guide explains how iron ore from the Basque mountains, the shipyards and the banks made Bilbao one of the richest industrial cities in Spain in the late 1800s, and how the river was cleaned and reshaped in the 1990s. It is a turning point of the route and a favourite photo spot from the open deck.
The estuary of Bilbao and its industrial towns
On the 2-hour cruise the boat continues down the estuary, known locally as the Ría, towards the open sea. On the left bank lie Barakaldo and Sestao, towns once lined with blast furnaces, steelworks and dry docks; a few cranes, warehouses and shipyards are still active. On the right bank the scenery softens towards Erandio, Leioa and the residential waterfront of Getxo, where grand stone villas look over the water.
This part of the trip is quieter and more open, with wide views, passing cargo vessels and herons along the banks. It shows a side of the Basque Country that most visitors never see from the city centre, and it explains why the estuary was the engine of the whole region. Bring a light jacket: the breeze grows cooler as the river widens towards the Cantabrian Sea.
Portugalete and the Bizkaia Bridge
The highlight of the cruise to Portugalete is passing beneath the Bizkaia Bridge, opened in 1893 as the first transporter bridge in the world and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006. Instead of a road deck, a hanging gondola carries people and cars across the river between Portugalete and Getxo every few minutes, while large ships pass freely underneath. Its iron towers rise about 60 metres above the water.
Portugalete itself is a historic town with a medieval centre, a Gothic basilica on the hill and a long riverside promenade. If you want to cross on the gondola or walk along the upper footbridge, you can come back another day by metro, about 20 minutes from central Bilbao; those tickets are not included. From the boat you get the classic view of the bridge framed by both banks before the cruise turns back towards the city.

Children enjoy the cruise, and those aged 5 to 10 have a child rate. Boarding involves a few steps on the pier, so travellers with reduced mobility should contact us before booking so we can check the boat for your date.
What should I bring?
A light jacket, sunglasses, sunscreen in summer, your phone or camera, and your booking. A small bottle of water is a good idea on warm days.

Late spring to early autumn brings the longest days and calmest weather, but the cruise runs all year and the covered seating keeps you comfortable on cooler days.
What happens in bad weather?
The cruise runs in light rain. If strong wind or high water makes sailing unsafe, the departure is cancelled and we contact you to arrange another date or a refund.
