Full Description
The elephant sanctuary in the countryside outside Chiang Mai
The sanctuary lies in the hills south of Chiang Mai, about an hour and a half by road through farmland and forest. It is set up as a place where elephants can live in natural surroundings, with the support of the local hill-tribe community that shares the land.
If you are searching for an ethical elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai, look for places that do not offer riding, chains or performances. This half-day programme is built around observing and feeding the elephants, and it is one of the most popular half-day tours in Chiang Mai for animal lovers.
The elephant feeding programme
The programme begins with a briefing about the habitat, history and behaviour of Asian elephants and how to act around them. You then walk with rangers into the forest and feed the elephants Napier grass, sugar cane and bananas, often watching them choose their favourites.
An adult elephant eats well over a hundred kilograms of plants each day, so feeding is central to their care. Some programmes also let you prepare herbal treats. This elephant feeding experience in Chiang Mai lets you get close safely, with rangers beside you at all times.
The river and time with the herd
A highlight of the half day is going down to the river with the elephants. They choose whether to bathe, and some activities may change at short notice because the animals are never forced. If they do go into the water, you may get wet, so bring clothes that can get dirty.
Many visitors ask whether they can wash or swim with the elephants. Where the elephants choose to bathe, guests can take part under the rangers' guidance, but the animals always decide. A change of clothes and a towel are your own responsibility and are not included.
Practical visit: transfer, timing and options
The whole experience takes five to five and a half hours, including the drive. Our default option collects you at your hotel within Chiang Mai city, and there are several start times through the morning and early afternoon; the booking panel shows the ones available.
There are also options with a meeting point in Chiang Mai city, where you arrive ten to fifteen minutes early, and an option to meet at the sanctuary yourself with no transfer, which means arranging your own transport for the ninety-minute journey. Children aged four to eight use the child fare.
