Lake Koman (Komani Lake)
Lake Koman is a long reservoir created by a dam on the Drin River in the 1980s, and it winds for many kilometres between steep, forested mountain walls. The scenery looks like a fjord, and a Lake Koman ferry ride is often listed among the most beautiful boat journeys in Europe. Visitors reach the boat by walking through a short tunnel near the dam.
On this tour the boat ride takes about an hour, and the guide explains the region's history and the local way of life while you look out over the water. Bring a light jacket because it can be cool on deck, and sunglasses for the glare. Boat operations depend on the weather, and if the boats cannot run, the trip is cancelled and you are informed.
The Shala River
The Shala River flows through a narrow valley in the Albanian Alps and is known for its clear turquoise water, white pebbles and mountain backdrop. It is one of the most photographed spots in northern Albania and is often described as the Caribbean of the Balkans, though the water is cold and the setting is entirely alpine.
You spend around three hours here with free time to swim, sunbathe and have lunch at a riverside restaurant. Your guide can also lead a short hike of about forty minutes to a viewpoint above the river. Kayaks and sunbeds are not included, and food and drinks are paid by you. The best time to visit the Shala River is between June and September, when the water is warm enough to swim.
The drive to the Albanian Alps
The route runs north from Tirana, passing Lezhe and the edge of the Shkoder region before climbing into the mountains. The full trip takes about four hours in each direction from Tirana, with a coffee stop on the way, and part of the road can be bumpy because of construction.
Use the drive to rest: the day starts at about 5:45 to 6:15 and your guide gives a short briefing after the first break. There is a comfortable minibus, and the digital booklet is available in your chosen language. Anyone prone to motion sickness should bring tablets, since the mountain road has many bends.
Choosing your Komani Lake and Shala River departure
The main option collects you from a hotel in Tirana, Durres or Golem and lasts about fourteen and a half hours. The Lezhe and Shkoder options meet at 7:00, at the roundabout on the main street in Lezhe or at Shkoder bus station, with shorter days of nine to nine and a half hours, but no hotel pickup.
If you are already in the north and prefer to travel independently, the boat-ticket-only option covers the return boat to the Shala River without transport or guide, and you must reach Komani Dam by 9:15. Pick the option that fits where you are staying, since the sights are the same.
