Full Description
Departure from the Quai des Chartrons
Lunch cruises leave from the Quai des Chartrons, the riverside of the historic merchants' district just north of the city centre. Behind the quay you see the long line of stone houses that traders built from the 17th century onwards, with cellars and warehouses that once received cargoes from the Atlantic and northern Europe. As the boat pulls away, the waterfront stretches back towards Place de la Bourse and the Stone Bridge in the distance.
The pier is a few minutes from a tram line B stop, so it is easy to reach from any central hotel. The exact pontoon is shown on your booking confirmation, and boarding starts shortly before the noon departure. Take a moment on the quay before boarding: the view upstream along the crescent of the river explains why Bordeaux is called the Port of the Moon.
The vertical-lift bridge
Soon after leaving the pier, the boat passes under the vertical-lift bridge opened in 2013, one of the largest bridges of its kind in Europe. Its four slender concrete pylons hold a central deck that can be raised in a few minutes to leave about 50 metres of clearance to let tall sailing ships and ocean cruise liners reach the historic quays, a sight that draws crowds on the banks.
From the river you appreciate how cleanly the bridge was designed to blend with the UNESCO-listed city. It carries cars, cyclists and pedestrians, linking the Bassins à flot district on the left bank with the new Bastide and Brazza neighbourhoods on the right bank, where old industrial land is being transformed into parks and homes.
Downstream: the docks and the right bank
Beyond the lift bridge the Garonne widens and the landscape changes. On the left bank, the entrance locks lead to the Bassins à flot, the 19th-century wet docks where ships once waited for the tide; the district now holds the former submarine base with its immersive digital art centre and the sea and maritime museum. On the right bank, green banks and new architecture alternate with traces of the city's industrial past.
The Garonne here is a powerful tidal river, and you may notice the strong current and the brown colour of its silt-rich water, which carries sediment down from the Pyrenees. Watching the river traffic, from small boats to cargo ships, is part of the charm of a Bordeaux lunch cruise on the Garonne, and the views open up as the city gives way to the river landscape.
Pont d'Aquitaine and the port of Bassens
The most dramatic moment of the cruise is passing beneath the Pont d'Aquitaine, a suspension bridge opened in 1967 whose deck hangs about 50 metres above the water between two tall towers. Its long cables and elegant silhouette make it one of the landmarks of the Bordeaux ring road, and from the boat you look straight up at its underside.
A little further downstream, the boat turns after the port of Bassens, a working commercial port on the right bank with cranes and silos, before heading back up the river. The return leg gives you the city skyline from the north, with church spires and the lift bridge ahead, and the boat is back at the Quai des Chartrons at about 2 pm.
Lunch on board: the premium menu
Lunch is served at your reserved table throughout the cruise. The premium menu of the default option includes a starter, a main course and a dessert with more refined dishes than the classic menu, which remains available as a second option in the booking panel. Every dish is prepared on board by the chef and his team, so the meal is freshly cooked rather than reheated.
Drinks are not included and can be ordered on board. The menu follows French cuisine and changes with the seasons; please tell us about dietary needs when booking so we can pass them on, though halal-certified meat cannot be guaranteed on board. Is a Bordeaux lunch cruise worth it? If you want a restful break between sightseeing and a new view of the city, it is an excellent choice.
