Full Description

Quai des Célestins and Vieux Lyon

The cruise leaves from Quai des Célestins, on the Saône side of the Presqu'île, Lyon's elegant city centre between its two rivers. Right across the water lies Vieux Lyon, the Renaissance quarter listed by UNESCO in 1998, with its tall houses in shades of ochre and pink, the Gothic cathedral and the neoclassical courthouse with its long row of columns.

In the 15th and 16th centuries this was the district of Italian and Flemish merchants and bankers, and the guide explains how fairs, silk and printing made Lyon one of the richest cities in Europe. Seeing the old quarter from a boat gives you the best idea of how it is squeezed between the river and the hill. It is easy to combine the cruise with a visit to Vieux Lyon, just one footbridge away.

Fourvière Hill from the River

Above the old town rises Fourvière hill, where the Romans founded Lugdunum in 43 BC. Its white basilica, built between 1872 and 1884, dominates the skyline with its four towers, and its esplanade offers the most famous panorama of the city. From the boat you see how steep the hill is, with gardens and stairways climbing up from the quays.

As the boat continues north, the river enters a narrow passage where Fourvière on the west and Croix-Rousse on the east close in on the water, with rocky slopes and old stone walls. The guide points out the old river quays, a giant painted mural on a riverside building and the bridges that link the two banks. Afternoon light on the hill makes this stretch very photogenic.

The Green Banks of the Saône

North of the centre, the Saône becomes greener and quieter. Its banks have been redesigned as long riverside promenades, and the city gives way to the old port district of Vaise, then to tree-lined banks with elegant 19th-century houses and gardens running down to the water. Many people in Lyon have never seen their river from this angle.

This is why a Saône river cruise to Île Barbe feels so different from a classic city boat tour: it combines urban history with nature, birds and reflections on calm water. The smooth river makes the trip comfortable even for those who are not used to boats, and the open sections of the boat are perfect for photos on fine days.

Île Barbe, Lyon's Island Abbey

Île Barbe is a small, wooded island in the Saône in Lyon's 9th arrondissement. A monastery was founded here in the early Middle Ages, around the 5th century, making it among the earliest monastic communities in the region; it became a powerful abbey with a large library and lands across the area. Today you can still see a Romanesque church, an old tower and stone buildings among the trees, now mostly private homes.

The island is linked to both banks by a slender suspension bridge from the early 19th century. The boat approaches the island so you can admire it from the water but does not land. If you want to visit Île Barbe afterwards, its public part is open during the day and can be reached by bus from the city centre; spring and summer evenings there are especially peaceful.
