Full Description

Confluence, Where Lyon's Rivers Meet

The cruise begins in the Confluence district at the southern tip of the Presqu'île, close to the point where the Saône flows into the Rhône. This former port and warehouse zone has been transformed into one of Lyon's most striking modern neighbourhoods, with colourful contemporary buildings set along the water, wide promenades and docks converted into restaurants and offices.

As the boat leaves the quay you see the Musée des Confluences, a cloud of glass and steel standing on the very tip of the peninsula, and in the evening its lighting reflects on the river. Quai Rambaud is reached easily on tram T1, and arriving 15 minutes before departure gives you time to stroll the quay and take photos while the sky is still bright on summer evenings.

Vieux Lyon by Night

Heading up the Saône, the boat passes Vieux Lyon, the Renaissance quarter at the foot of Fourvière hill, listed by UNESCO in 1998 as part of the Historic Site of Lyon. From the water you see the long row of tall merchants' houses in ochre and pink, the Gothic cathedral and the neoclassical courthouse with its line of columns along the quay.

At night the old quarter is lit warmly, and the reflections of its facades on the Saône are one of the most memorable sights of any Lyon river cruise. The audio guide tells you how silk, banking and printing made the city rich in the 16th century. If you have time during the day, it is well worth exploring Vieux Lyon on foot as well, to see its courtyards and covered passages.

Fourvière Hill and the Illuminated Basilica

Rising above Vieux Lyon, Fourvière hill is crowned by a white basilica built between 1872 and 1884, with four corner towers that are visible from all over the city. Below it, hidden among trees, are the Roman theatres of Lugdunum, the town founded in 43 BC that became the capital of Roman Gaul.

From the river the basilica appears high above the rooftops, and after dark it is floodlit, making it the classic photograph of a dinner cruise in Lyon. Sit on the side of the dining room facing the west bank for the best view on the way up the Saône. To visit the basilica itself, the funicular from Vieux Lyon reaches the top in a few minutes, and the esplanade offers a wide panorama over the city.

The Saône Quays and Bridges

The Saône is the quieter of Lyon's two rivers, lined with plane trees, stone quays and a series of elegant bridges and footbridges, some suspended on cables and others built of stone. On the east bank the Presqu'île shows its grand 19th-century apartment buildings, while further north the slopes of Croix-Rousse, the old silk-weavers' district, climb up from the water.

The calm water makes this a smooth cruise even for guests who are not used to boats. Lyon is a city shaped by its rivers, and seeing it from a restaurant boat is one of the easiest ways to understand its layout. Lyon river cruises run all year, and the dining room is heated and enclosed, so the evening is comfortable in every season.
