Full Description

The Koblenz cable car over the Rhine

The Koblenz cable car was built for the Federal Garden Show held in the city in 2011 and quickly became one of its favourite attractions. Its spacious cabins with large windows float about 890 metres across the Rhine, from the valley station on the riverbank promenade next to St. Kastor Basilica to the mountain station on the Ehrenbreitstein plateau. The cabins run continuously, so there is no timetable to follow, and the system is fully barrier-free.

During the ride you see the Deutsches Eck, the old town rooftops, the bridges over the Moselle and the boats on the Rhine far below. Many visitors ask how to get to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress; the cable car is the easiest and most scenic way, avoiding the steep road up the hill. In season it runs daily from 10:00 until at least 19:00, and your ticket lets you skip the queue at the ticket desk.

Ehrenbreitstein Fortress: history and architecture

Ehrenbreitstein Fortress crowns a rock plateau more than 100 metres above the Rhine, opposite the mouth of the Moselle. A castle stood here from around the year 1000, and for centuries it protected the archbishops of Trier. After French troops blew up the old fortress in 1801, the Prussians built the present fortress between 1817 and 1828 as part of a ring of fortifications around Koblenz, creating one of the largest preserved fortresses in Europe.

Behind its massive stone walls you find bastions, gates, courtyards, casemates and long barrack buildings that now hold exhibitions and cultural venues. Together with the rest of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, the fortress is part of a UNESCO World Heritage landscape. Is Ehrenbreitstein Fortress worth visiting? Yes: the architecture, the history and above all the views make it the highlight of any visit to Koblenz.

Museums and exhibitions inside the fortress

With the combination ticket you enter the fortress itself and its museums and exhibitions, housed in the historic buildings. Permanent displays cover the history of photography, archaeology along the Middle Rhine and the Moselle, and the history of the fortress and its soldiers, while temporary exhibitions on changing themes add something new on each visit. Clear explanations make the displays interesting for teenagers as well as adults.

Plan at least two hours for the fortress if you want to see the exhibitions as well as the terraces. Ehrenbreitstein Fortress opening hours for the museums and exhibitions end at 18:00, while the cable car keeps running later, so start your visit early enough. With the cable-car-only option you can still enjoy the outdoor areas, but not the fortress interiors and museums.

Fortress park, observation deck and views

Around the fortress lies a landscaped park created for the garden show, with lawns, paths, a children's playground and an observation deck right on the edge of the plateau. From here the view is spectacular: the Deutsches Eck pointing like a ship's bow into the meeting of the two rivers, the old town of Koblenz with its church towers, the Moselle bridges and the Rhine flowing north through the hills.

Families enjoy the playground and the open space, and there is also an adventure golf course, which is paid separately. The best time to visit is on a clear afternoon or towards sunset, when the light falls on the old town across the river. Dogs on a lead are welcome on the outdoor grounds and in the cable car, but not in the indoor exhibition rooms.

The valley station: St. Kastor Basilica and the Deutsches Eck

The valley station stands on the Rhine promenade beside St. Kastor Basilica, the oldest church in Koblenz, consecrated in the ninth century and still a fine example of Romanesque architecture with its twin towers. A few minutes' walk north brings you to the Deutsches Eck, the headland at the confluence of the Rhine and the Moselle, with its monumental equestrian statue, flags and steps where you can stand at the very tip.

Combine the cable car with a stroll through the old town of Koblenz, with its squares, fountains and medieval churches, or a Rhine boat tour from the piers nearby. This makes the Koblenz cable car tickets an easy half-day plan in the heart of the city, whether you arrive by train, by car or on a river cruise.
