Full Description
Marienplatz and the old town
Marienplatz has been the central square of Munich since the city's founding in 1158. Its neo-Gothic New Town Hall is famous for the Glockenspiel, whose figures dance and joust above the crowd each day at 11 am and noon, with an extra show at 5 pm in summer. Just around the corner rise the twin onion-domed towers of the Frauenkirche, the city's cathedral.
This is the best place to start a Munich hop-on hop-off tour. Hop off for an hour to see the Viktualienmarkt food market, St Peter's Church with its tower view and the lively pedestrian streets towards Karlsplatz. Most visitors spend half a day in the old town before riding on.
The Residenz, Odeonsplatz and Königsplatz
A few minutes north stands the Munich Residenz, the vast city palace of the Wittelsbach dynasty, which ruled Bavaria for more than 700 years. Its museum and treasury display some of the richest royal collections in Europe. Next door, Odeonsplatz opens onto the Feldherrnhalle and the yellow Theatine Church, a masterpiece of Italian Baroque.
Further west, Königsplatz is a grand square framed by Greek-style temples built by King Ludwig I, now housing the Glyptothek sculpture museum and the State Collection of Antiquities. The nearby Pinakothek galleries make this the museum quarter of Munich. Plan a full day if you want to visit the Munich museums in depth.
Nymphenburg Palace
West of the centre lies Nymphenburg Palace, the summer residence of the Bavarian rulers, begun in 1664 to celebrate the birth of an heir. Its Baroque façade stretches for more than 600 metres, and inside you find the Gallery of Beauties commissioned by Ludwig I and the room where Ludwig II was born.
The palace park, with canals, lakes and small pavilions, is one of the most beautiful gardens in Germany. Hop off here for two to three hours. If you are wondering how to get to Nymphenburg Palace from the old town, the full-network bus ticket is one of the easiest ways, without changing trams.
The Olympic Park
Built for the 1972 Summer Olympics, the Olympic Park is known for its sweeping tent-like roof of acrylic glass, a landmark of modern architecture. The Olympic Tower rises 291 metres and offers one of the best views over Munich, and on clear days as far as the Alps.
The park is a favourite place for walks, and the BMW Welt and BMW Museum are just across the road. On the full network of the Munich bus tour, this stop is ideal for a long break. The best time to visit the Olympic Park is late afternoon, when the light over the hill and lake is at its most beautiful.
