Full Description
Neuschwanstein Castle, King Ludwig II's fairy tale
Neuschwanstein was begun in 1869 on a rocky ridge above the Pöllat gorge. King Ludwig II of Bavaria dreamed of a medieval knight's castle inspired by Wagner's operas, but he lived here for only a few months before his mysterious death in 1886. The palace was never finished, and it opened to visitors just weeks later.
Inside you see the Throne Hall, the Singers' Hall and the king's bedroom on a guided visit of about 30 minutes. The castle is reached by a steep 30- to 40-minute walk from Hohenschwangau village, or by shuttle bus or horse carriage. Neuschwanstein tickets are timed and sell out early, which is why a day trip to Neuschwanstein with tickets included is so popular.
Marienbrücke and Hohenschwangau village
The classic postcard view of Neuschwanstein is from the Marienbrücke, an iron footbridge spanning the Pöllat gorge about 15 minutes' walk above the castle. From here you see the white towers against the forested cliffs and the Alpine lakes beyond. The bridge sometimes closes in winter or for repairs, so our guide will advise on the day.
Down in the village of Hohenschwangau stands the yellow Hohenschwangau Castle, where Ludwig spent his childhood summers, beside the lake of Alpsee. The best time to visit Neuschwanstein is early autumn, when the forests turn gold and the summer crowds thin, though snow-covered winter days have their own magic.
Linderhof Palace, the king's private retreat
Linderhof is the smallest of Ludwig's three palaces and the only one he saw completed and lived in for long periods. Built between 1869 and 1886 in a quiet Alpine valley, it was modelled on the French royal style he admired. The rooms glitter with gold, and the Hall of Mirrors creates an endless reflection of chandeliers.
The guided interior visit takes around 25 minutes, after which you can explore the formal gardens, the cascade and the fountain that shoots high into the air. In the warmer months the park buildings, such as the Moorish Kiosk and the artificial Venus Grotto, can also be seen. A Linderhof Palace tour shows a more intimate side of the king.
The Bavarian Alps on the way
The route from Munich crosses the rolling foothills of Upper Bavaria before climbing into the Ammergau Alps, with onion-domed churches, painted farmhouses and green meadows along the way. Depending on the season and the day, the coach may pass through the woodcarving village of Oberammergau or the grand Ettal Abbey.
The drive takes about two hours each way, and the audio commentary on board fills in the story of Ludwig II, the kingdom of Bavaria and the landscapes you pass. If you are wondering how to get to Neuschwanstein from Munich without a car, this full-day castle tour is the simplest answer.
