Overview

The Sir Lancelot medieval dinner show is one of the most entertaining things to do in Budapest at night: a three-hour evening in a restaurant styled as a medieval inn, where you eat a generous Hungarian-style dinner while swordsmen, jugglers, dancers and musicians perform in short acts between courses. You arrive around 7 pm at Podmaniczky utca in District VI, near Nyugati railway station, receive a welcome drink, and the show begins at about 7:30 pm. Your ticket includes the menu you choose, a welcome drink and a half-litre drink with dinner. The default menu is Lancelot's Challenge, a sharing-size Angus beef platter; three other menus are available. It is a shared evening with other guests and there is no hotel pickup.

Full Description

Sir Lancelot medieval restaurant

Sir Lancelot is a themed restaurant on Podmaniczky utca in Terézváros, District VI, decorated and run in the style of a medieval banquet hall. The idea is to step back into the Middle Ages, when Buda was a royal seat and the Kingdom of Hungary was one of the great powers of Central Europe, and to share a long, hearty meal the way a lord and his guests might have done. Tables are shared by your party and the room fills up quickly once the evening starts.

If you are looking for a Budapest medieval dinner that feels like a party rather than a formal restaurant, this is it. Expect noise, music and laughter rather than a quiet candlelit meal. We recommend booking a few days ahead in summer and around Christmas and New Year, when the restaurant is often full, and arriving on time so you are seated before the first act.

The medieval show

From about 7:30 pm the performers take the floor. The show is made up of several short acts of three to five minutes each, spread across the evening with breaks in between so you can eat and talk. You will see sword fights between costumed swordsmen, jugglers performing their tricks, dancers moving to the rhythm and live medieval music filling the room.

It is important to know that this is not a continuous three-hour performance: the evening is a dinner with entertainment, and the acts come and go between courses. That rhythm is exactly what makes it fun for groups and families with older children, who rarely lose interest. Sit near the central floor if you want to be close to the action, and keep your camera ready for the sword fights.

The menus and what is served

Each ticket is linked to a menu chosen when you book. The default option, Lancelot's Challenge, is a sharing-size platter of Angus beef rump steak slices with cheddar, onions, beans and bacon, served with foil-baked potatoes, sour cream and garlic. Butcher Sword is a large spiced tomahawk steak with cheddar and sauce, the most generous menu of the night. Beef Fillet Budapest Style layers fillet mignon with bacon, goose liver and Budapest-style ragout, and Lord's Dishes offers a selection of hearty Hungarian dishes.

Every menu comes with a welcome drink on arrival and a half-litre drink with dinner. Portions are large, so many couples are happy to share. The dishes contain lactose, gluten, celery, mustard and nuts, and two of the menus include pork, so please tell us about allergies or dietary needs before booking and we will check what is possible.

District VI and the Nyugati station area

The restaurant sits just behind Nyugati railway station, the Western Station, whose iron-and-glass hall opened in 1877 and is still one of the most elegant station buildings in Europe. From here Teréz körút, part of the Grand Boulevard, leads to Oktogon and Andrássy Avenue, the grand avenue that is part of Budapest's UNESCO World Heritage listing, with the Hungarian State Opera a short walk away.

How to get to Sir Lancelot is simple: metro line 3 and trams 4 and 6 stop at Nyugati pályaudvar, a few minutes on foot from the door. St Stephen's Basilica and the Danube are about 15 to 20 minutes' walk away, so the dinner show is easy to combine with an afternoon of sightseeing or an evening stroll by the river afterwards.
