Full Description
Ranthambore National Park and Tiger Reserve
Ranthambore lies in eastern Rajasthan where the Aravalli and Vindhya hill ranges meet, a landscape of dry deciduous forest, rocky ridges, grassy valleys and lakes. For centuries these were the hunting grounds of the maharajas of Jaipur. The area became a game sanctuary in 1955, joined India's national tiger conservation programme in 1973 and was declared a national park in 1980. Today the wider tiger reserve covers well over a thousand square kilometres.
Many travellers ask whether Ranthambore is worth visiting from Jaipur in a single day. If seeing a tiger in the wild is on your list, it is one of the most rewarding choices in India, because the open forest and the tigers' habit of resting near water make sightings more frequent than in denser parks. Sightings are never guaranteed, but even without one the scenery and birdlife make the day memorable.
The safari: zones, jeeps and wildlife
The park is divided into numbered zones, and the forest department allocates each safari vehicle to one zone, so routes differ from drive to drive. On this tour you ride in a shared open jeep, called a gypsy, which takes six guests, or in a larger open canter with about twenty seats, depending on availability. A naturalist guide and a forest driver accompany every vehicle, and the afternoon game drive lasts about three hours, starting between 14:00 and 15:00 depending on the season.
Besides the Bengal tiger, Ranthambore shelters leopards, sloth bears, striped hyenas, jungle cats, sambar and spotted deer, nilgai antelope, wild boar and langur monkeys. Marsh crocodiles bask on the lake shores, and hundreds of bird species live here, from peafowl and painted storks to crested serpent eagles. Keep quiet, stay seated and let your guide read the alarm calls of deer and monkeys, which often reveal a hidden tiger.
Ranthambore Fort and the lakes
High on a cliff inside the reserve stands Ranthambore Fort, begun around the tenth century and one of the strongest fortresses of medieval India. It changed hands many times between Rajput clans and the sultans of Delhi, and in 2013 it was listed by UNESCO as part of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan. Inside its walls, the temple of Trinetra Ganesh draws pilgrims from all over the region.
Below the fort lie three lakes, Padam Talao, Rajbagh Talao and Malik Talao, where ruined pavilions, banyan trees and old hunting lodges stand at the water's edge. These are some of the most photogenic places in the park, and when your safari zone includes them you may see tigers cooling off in the shallows, deer grazing on the shore and crocodiles drifting by, with the fort walls rising on the skyline behind.
How to get to Ranthambore from Jaipur
Ranthambore National Park is about 160 to 180 kilometres south-east of Jaipur by road, near the town of Sawai Madhopur. There are trains, but they rarely match the safari times, which is why a private car is the easiest way to get to Ranthambore for a day. Our driver leaves Jaipur between 09:00 and 09:45 and follows the highway through the farmland and villages of eastern Rajasthan, with a short break on the way.
You reach the park area around lunchtime, with time to eat at a restaurant near the park gate at your own expense before the safari vehicles gather. After the game drive our driver is waiting at the meeting place and takes you straight back to Jaipur, where you usually arrive between 21:00 and 22:00. The car is yours for the whole journey, so you can stop for photos or a rest whenever you need.
Best time to visit Ranthambore
The main zones of the park are open from October to the end of June and close during the monsoon, from July to September, when only a few outer zones may remain open. The best time to visit Ranthambore for tiger sightings is March to June, when the forest thins out and animals gather around the remaining water, though afternoons are very hot. From October to February the weather is pleasant, the landscape is green and the light is beautiful for photography.
This option uses the afternoon game drive, which lets you leave Jaipur at a comfortable hour in the morning. If you prefer the cooler and often more active early hours, another option on this page leaves Jaipur in the middle of the night to join the morning safari, which starts between 06:00 and 07:00. In winter, open vehicles can be cold in the late afternoon, so bring a warm layer.
