Full Description
Positano from the sea
The first minutes of a private Positano boat tour are the most photographed: as the boat leaves the marina, the whole village comes into view, its houses climbing the steep valley up to the mountains, the tiled dome of the church shining above the main beach. From the water you understand how Positano was built, layer upon layer, by a seafaring community that once traded across the Mediterranean.
Your skipper meets you at the marina at 09:00 or 14:00 and suggests the route of the day according to wind and sea. Close to the village you pass the beach of Fornillo, the old watchtowers that once warned of pirate raids and small coves where the cliffs drop straight into deep blue water. Expect the first swim stop within half an hour of leaving.
The Li Galli islands
West of Positano lie the Li Galli, three small islands that in ancient legend were the islands of the sirens whose songs lured sailors onto the rocks. Today they are privately owned and you cannot land, but the boat can circle them closely, and the water around them is among the clearest of the coast, perfect for snorkelling among fish and rocky reefs.
On a calm morning the skipper may continue towards the green slopes of the Sorrento peninsula, where the sea is protected and the coves are wild. The crossing from Positano to the islands takes about twenty minutes, so even a four-hour tour leaves plenty of time to swim, sunbathe on the deck and simply enjoy the silence of the open sea.
Praiano and the fjord of Furore
Heading east, the boat follows the cliffs to Praiano, a village spread along a ridge, with its little beach of Marina di Praia tucked between rock walls and an old stone tower above the water. The coastline here is less crowded than Positano and many cliffs are pierced by small caves where the water turns turquoise.
A little further on is the fjord of Furore, a narrow cleft in the mountains where a stream reaches the sea. A road bridge crosses high above a tiny beach and the old fishermen's houses built into the rock. Seen from a boat, it is one of the most dramatic sights on the coast, and the skipper can bring you right to the mouth of the fjord for photographs.
The Emerald Grotto
Near Conca dei Marini is the Emerald Grotto, a sea cave discovered by a local fisherman in 1932. Sunlight filters through an underwater passage and turns the water a brilliant green, while stalactites and stalagmites rise from the surface, formed when the cave was dry before the sea level rose. A ceramic nativity scene rests on the seabed a few metres below.
How do you get to the Emerald Grotto? By land you reach it by stairs or a lift from the coast road; by sea your skipper brings you to its entrance, where small rowing boats take visitors inside. Emerald Grotto opening hours are generally from morning to late afternoon in season, weather permitting, and the entrance fee is paid on the spot.
Swimming, snorkelling and the best time to go
Whichever direction you choose, the heart of the tour is time in the water. The boat carries masks and life jackets for every guest, beach towels and a freshwater shower to rinse off the salt, and your skipper anchors in sheltered spots where the seabed is visible several metres down. Soft drinks and snacks are served on board.
The best time for a boat tour on the Amalfi Coast is from May to early October, when the sea is warm and usually calm. The morning departure enjoys softer light and quieter water; the afternoon departure ends in the golden light of early evening. Either way you are back at the Positano marina about four hours after leaving.
