Full Description
Merano Thermal Baths
Merano has welcomed spa guests since the 19th century, when its mild climate, sheltered by the Alps, made it a fashionable health resort. The modern Merano Thermal Baths opened in 2005 as a large glass cube beside the Passer river, designed so that from almost every pool you see the surrounding mountains, slopes covered in apple orchards and the town's rooftops.
The thermal water comes from springs high on the mountain above the town and is valued for its gentle mineral content. Inside, everything is designed for calm: wide windows, natural stone and wood, and quiet corners to rest between swims. Is the Merano Thermal Baths worth visiting? After a few days of mountain drives or hikes in the Dolomites, it is one of the most relaxing ways to spend a day in South Tyrol.
Inside the baths: indoor and outdoor pools
The indoor hall holds a series of pools at different temperatures, from warm thermal water to cooler pools for swimming, with saltwater pools, whirlpool seats and massage jets, all open year round. It is especially atmospheric on winter evenings, when the glass walls frame snowy peaks and steam rises from the warm water.
From spring to autumn, depending on the weather, the outdoor area opens in a large green park with palm trees, lawns for sunbathing and pools under the open sky. Families enjoy the outdoor space in summer, while couples often prefer quieter weekday mornings. The sauna area is a separate zone and is not included in this ticket, but you can add it on site if you wish.
Planning your visit: opening hours and tickets
Merano Thermal Baths opening hours are 09:00 to 21:00 every day, and the day pass lets you stay for the whole opening time, leave for lunch in town and come back. The 2-hour and 3-hour options suit a shorter swim between sightseeing. At the entrance you receive a magnetic wristband that opens your electronic locker and pays for extras inside.
Bring your swimwear and flip-flops; bathrobes and towels can be rented, and food and drinks are sold on site. Children pay a reduced rate. The best time to visit is a weekday morning or a winter evening, when the pools are calmer, while summer weekends are busiest. The building is wheelchair-accessible, so most travellers can enjoy it comfortably.
Merano town and how to get there
The baths stand at the edge of the old town, so you can combine your visit with a walk under the arcades of Via dei Portici, along the riverside promenades lined with palms and Art Nouveau villas, or up to the botanical gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle on the edge of town. In December the riverside fills with a festive market.
How to get to Merano? Trains from Bolzano take about 40 minutes, and Bolzano is on the Brenner railway, about an hour and a half from Verona; the baths are a short walk from Merano station. By road Merano is around 30 minutes from Bolzano. Halal food is limited in Merano, but vegetarian dishes and fish are easy to find, and our team can arrange a private transfer from your hotel in the Dolomites.
