Full Description
Lake Santa Croce in the Alpago
About an hour and a quarter north of Venice, Lake Santa Croce is one of the largest lakes of the Veneto, set on the green Alpago plateau with the first limestone peaks of the Dolomites rising behind it. Steady afternoon winds make it a favourite spot for windsurfing and kitesurfing, while early in the day the water is often calm enough to mirror the mountains.
This is your first photo stop of the day, around ten minutes, and the moment when the flat Venetian plain gives way to the Alps. On a private tour you can ask the driver to linger a little longer if the light is perfect, or to move on quickly to gain time at Lake Misurina later. The difference in landscape after just an hour on the road surprises most guests.
Pieve di Cadore
Pieve di Cadore is the historic capital of the Cadore, a mountain district on the upper Piave river. The town is the birthplace of one of the great Venetian Renaissance masters, and it is also the cradle of the Italian eyewear industry, celebrated in a small museum of spectacles. From its square you look across to Monte Antelao, at about 3,264 metres the second-highest peak of the Dolomites.
You have about 30 minutes here for a short walk, a coffee and photos of the lake of Centro Cadore below the town. It is the kind of stop that shows everyday life in the mountains rather than a resort, and a good chance to stretch your legs before the mountain roads. Our driver tells you about the valley's history as you continue north.
Lake Auronzo and the Ansiei valley
Following the Ansiei valley, the road reaches Lake Auronzo, a long turquoise reservoir created in the 1930s beside the village of Auronzo di Cadore. Its dam offers a wide view along the water to the forested slopes, and on sunny days the colour of the lake is so intense that it looks almost tropical.
The photo stop here lasts about 20 minutes. Auronzo is also the gateway to the Tre Cime di Lavaredo: from the lakeshore the road climbs through the forest toward Misurina, the next and longest stop of the day. In winter the village is snowy and quiet, and in summer families come here for the lakeside paths, so the scene changes completely with the seasons.
Lake Misurina and the Tre Cime di Lavaredo
Lake Misurina lies at about 1,754 metres, a calm mountain lake with the Sorapiss group and the Cadini di Misurina reflected in it and the famous Tre Cime di Lavaredo rising to the north. A flat path of roughly 2.6 km circles the water in about 45 minutes, and lakeside restaurants serve lunch, which is not included.
You have about two hours here, the heart of the day. From mid-June to mid-September a chairlift climbs to the Col de Varda viewpoint at about 2,100 metres, with tickets paid on the spot. How to get to Lake Misurina without a car? Buses are infrequent and slow, which is why a private Dolomites tour from Venice is the most comfortable way to spend real time here.
Cortina d'Ampezzo
The last stop is Cortina d'Ampezzo, nicknamed the Pearl of the Dolomites, set at about 1,224 metres among the Tofane, Cristallo and Sorapiss peaks. It hosted the Winter Olympic Games in 1956 and co-hosted them again in 2026, and its pedestrian Corso Italia is lined with boutiques, cafés and the tall bell tower of the parish church.
You have about 30 minutes of free time to walk the Corso and photograph the peaks above the rooftops. The Faloria cable car rises from the town centre to about 2,100 metres in its operating seasons, with tickets paid on the spot. Then our driver takes you back to Venice, about two and a half hours, arriving in the early evening.
