Full Description

Misurina and the road to the Auronzo hut

The day starts in Misurina, a small resort on the shore of a calm lake at about 1,754 m, a few kilometres from the Tre Cime. It is the natural base for a Tre Cime di Lavaredo hike, with parking, cafés and hotels around the water. From here a narrow toll road climbs through larch forest and over open pastures to the Auronzo hut, the usual starting point of the loop.

How to get to Tre Cime di Lavaredo without stress? The road is busy in summer and the toll is charged per car, so having transport and the toll included makes the start simple. The drive takes about 15 minutes, and by the time you step out at about 2,320 m the south faces of the Three Peaks already tower right above the car park, with views across to the Cadini group and the Sorapiss.

Lavaredo hut and Forcella Lavaredo

The first part of the loop follows a wide, almost flat gravel track beneath the south faces, past a small chapel to the Lavaredo hut at about 2,344 m. It is an easy warm-up, ideal for photographs of the towers from below. Your guide explains how the pale dolomite rock formed from ancient sea reefs and why it breaks into such vertical towers and scree slopes.

From the hut a steadier climb leads to Forcella Lavaredo, the saddle at about 2,450 m that is the highest point of the route. This is where the view suddenly changes: the famous north faces of the Tre Cime appear, along with wide meadows and distant peaks. It is the most rewarding moment of the hike, and we pause here to enjoy it before continuing.

Locatelli hut and the north faces

A balcony path then crosses high meadows to the Locatelli hut at about 2,405 m, which faces the north walls of the Tre Cime head-on. This is the classic postcard view of the Dolomites: three huge towers rising from the scree, often with a small chapel and the little Piani lakes in the foreground. Many hikers stop here for a hot meal or a drink at the hut, which is at your own expense.

Is the Tre Cime di Lavaredo worth visiting? From this spot nobody doubts it. Behind the hut the rock of Monte Paterno is honeycombed with tunnels dug during the First World War, when Italian and Austro-Hungarian troops faced each other across these ridges. Your guide shows where the front line ran and how soldiers lived through the winters at this altitude. Allow about 45 minutes for rest and photos.

Forcella Col di Mezzo and nature on the trail

The return follows a quieter path down through the Rienza valley pastures and up to Forcella Col di Mezzo, at about 2,315 m, below the vertical west faces of the peaks. This side of the loop is less crowded and offers a completely different angle on the towers, before the path gently curves back to the Auronzo hut.

Along the whole route your guide points out marmots whistling from their burrows, chamois on the scree and, in early summer, alpine flowers such as gentians and edelweiss. The best time to visit Tre Cime di Lavaredo for hiking is from late June to early October, when the huts are open and the paths are clear of snow; mornings are calmer and less crowded. The full walk takes about 5 hours at an easy pace.
