Full Description
The Mijikenda people of the Kenyan coast
The name Mijikenda means 'the nine homesteads' and brings together nine closely related peoples of the coastal hinterland, among them the Giriama, Digo, Duruma, Rabai and Chonyi. For centuries they lived in fortified villages called kaya, built in clearings of thick forest on the ridges behind the coast, and the surviving sacred kaya forests are now protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Their languages are close to Swahili, and farming, music and the councils of elders still shape life in the villages behind Mombasa.
This private Mijikenda village tour lets you meet that culture through the people who live it, not as a stage show. Your guide grew up in the community, translates the conversations and explains customs as you go, so you can ask about family life, farming, beliefs or the changes that town life has brought. For many guests it is the most memorable of all the things to do in Mombasa away from the beach.
Homesteads, elders and storytelling
At the village you are welcomed by community elders and walk between the homesteads: family compounds of mud-and-wattle houses with thatched roofs, raised granaries for maize, and small plots of cassava, coconut palms and vegetables. The elders share stories passed down through generations, about the old kaya villages, the role of the council of elders and the customs that surround birth, marriage and the harvest.
You are invited into a home to see how meals are cooked over a wood fire and how the coconut palm provides food, roofing, rope and woven mats. Questions are welcome, and photographs are fine when you ask first. The village visit usually takes around an hour and a half, and because the tour is private you can linger where you are most interested instead of following a group, or move on sooner if young children are getting tired.
Traditional dance and drums
Music sits at the heart of Mijikenda life, and the village visit includes a live performance by men and women of the community in traditional dress. Dancers move to large wooden drums, shakers and call-and-response singing, and the full, layered skirts worn by the women swing with every step. These dances were traditionally performed at weddings, harvest celebrations and gatherings of the elders, and each song has a story your guide can explain.
You are warmly invited to join in, and most guests, especially children, end up drumming or dancing alongside the performers. It feels like a joyful moment shared with neighbours rather than a show put on for visitors, and it is a lovely chance for photographs and video. Tips for the performers are not included but are always appreciated, and they go directly to the families who welcome you into their village.
A local school visit (weekdays)
On weekdays the tour includes a guided stop at a local primary school, where you see a classroom, meet the teachers and learn how children in rural coastal Kenya are taught, often in large classes with few resources. Lessons are given in English and Swahili, and the pupils are usually curious and happy to sing a song or ask visitors where they come from.
The visit is short and respects the school day; your guide arranges it with the teachers and explains how the community supports the school. If you would like to bring something, exercise books, pens and pencils are far more useful than sweets, and we are happy to tell you before the trip what the school needs most. At weekends and during school holidays the tour simply spends more time in the village and at the sanctuary, so the day is just as full.
Nguuni Wildlife Sanctuary: giraffes roaming free
The Nguuni Wildlife Sanctuary lies a short drive north of Mombasa, inland from Bamburi, on land that was once a coral limestone quarry and has been restored into open grassland dotted with doum palms and acacia trees. With no large predators, it is home to giraffes, eland, oryx, waterbuck and ostriches that roam freely, which means you can watch them up close in a calm and safe setting, ideal for children.
Your guide and a sanctuary guide take you towards the animals, depending on where they are grazing that day, and the giraffes often come surprisingly near. Allow about an hour here. Late afternoon is especially beautiful, with soft light over the palms, which makes the 16:00 start popular with photographers, while the 08:00 start is the coolest. The animals move freely, so exactly what you see can never be guaranteed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private tour?
It is a private tour. The vehicle, the driver and the guide are only for your party, and no other travellers join you at any point.
Can we change the itinerary or the pace?
Yes. Because the tour is private, you can spend longer in the village, shorten the school stop or take more time with the giraffes. Tell the guide on the day, or let us know your wishes when you book.
How many people can join, and how many fit in the vehicle?
The tour is for your own party, from a couple to a larger family or group of friends. Tell us how many you are when you book and we provide a vehicle of the right size.
Is the price per person or per group?
The tour is priced per person, with an adult rate and a lower rate for children aged 17 and under, and it stays private for your party. Entry fees for the village and the sanctuary are paid separately in cash on the day. The booking panel on this page shows the current price.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes, pickup and drop-off are included anywhere within Mombasa, Nyali, Bamburi and Mtwapa. Cruise passengers are met outside the port gate, and hotels further away can be collected on request at an extra cost.
What is included?
The private vehicle with pickup and drop-off, an English-speaking local guide, the Mijikenda village visit with storytelling and homesteads, the traditional dance, the school visit on weekdays, the visit to the Nguuni Wildlife Sanctuary and bottled water.
Are the entry fees included?
No. The village and sanctuary entry fees are paid in cash, in Kenyan shillings, directly to your hosts on the day, so the money goes straight to the community and the sanctuary.
How long is the tour?
About five hours from pickup to drop-off. You can start at 08:00, 12:00 or 16:00.
Is it suitable for children or people with reduced mobility?
It is excellent for children, who usually love the dancing and the giraffes, and the private pace makes it easy with little ones. Paths in the village and the sanctuary are unpaved and uneven, so it is not suitable for wheelchair users; contact us to discuss any mobility needs.
What should I bring and wear?
Modest, comfortable clothes that cover shoulders and knees, closed shoes, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent and cash in Kenyan shillings for the entry fees and any souvenirs or tips.
What is the best time of day and season?
The 08:00 start is the coolest and lets you see a school in session on weekdays; the 16:00 start gives the softest light at the sanctuary. The tour runs all year, and the drier months from December to March and from July to October are the most comfortable.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose your date and start time in the booking panel and send your request. Our team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes and sends your exact pickup time before the tour.
