Diani
Plan Diani with Haqqi Tours: day tours, private airport transfers, attraction tickets and packages, run by our own team and confirmed on WhatsApp in Arabic or English.
Step onto Diani Beach at low tide and the sand runs flat and white towards a reef that holds the Indian Ocean back in a line of gentle surf. Palms lean over the shore, a colobus monkey watches from a baobab, and fishermen push their outrigger canoes into the shallows as the sun lifts out of the sea. By mid-morning the water has returned, pale turquoise and warm as a bath, and the beach is quiet enough to hear it.

View allDiani at first sight
Diani lies on Kenya's south coast, about an hour and a half from Mombasa, and is the country's best-known beach. Behind the long shoreline are coral forests sacred to the Digo people, the hills of Shimba, a centuries-old mosque at the mouth of the Kongo River, and to the south the dolphins and coral gardens of the Kisite marine park. It is a beach with a hinterland worth exploring.
Why include Diani in your itinerary?
- Kenya's finest beach. Diani's long stretch of soft white sand, shaded by palms and protected by a coral reef, is calm, clean and warm all year, ideal for swimming, sailing and lazy days.
- Dolphins and coral gardens. From Shimoni, a short drive south, dhows sail to Wasini Island and the Kisite marine park, where dolphins are often seen and snorkelling over the coral is superb.
- Forest and safari close by. Shimba Hills, sacred kaya forests and the rare colobus monkeys are minutes away, and Tsavo East can be reached for a day or overnight safari.
Signature experiences in Diani
Wasini Island and the Kisite Marine Park
A full day that begins with a drive south to Shimoni, then a dhow sail to the Kisite-Mpunguti marine park, where dolphins frequently ride the bow wave and the coral gardens teem with parrotfish, turtles and rays. Lunch is a Swahili seafood feast on Wasini Island, with time for its coral garden boardwalk and mangroves. We include transfers, the boat and snorkel gear. Dolphins are wild, and sightings are never guaranteed.
Shimba Hills and the Sacred Forests
Rising behind the coast, Shimba Hills National Reserve is cool, green and misty, with elephants, sable antelope found nowhere else in Kenya, a waterfall reached on foot and views across the ocean. Nearer the beach, the Kaya Kinondo sacred forest, protected by the Digo community, can be visited with a local elder. Our guided day tours combine the reserve with the forest and a picnic lunch.
Colobus Monkeys and the Kongo Mosque
Diani's beach road passes beneath rope bridges built so that the endangered Angolan colobus can cross safely between the trees. A conservation centre explains their protection, and a short walk among the forest reveals them with their white capes. At the northern end of the beach, the coral-stone Kongo Mosque stands among baobabs where the river meets the sea, one of the oldest on the coast.
Tsavo East Safari from Diani
The red elephants of Tsavo East are about three hours from Diani by road, which makes a long day trip or, better, an overnight safari possible from the beach. Lions, giraffes, zebras and buffalo gather along the Galana River and at the waterholes, and the dry season brings the best viewing. Our safaris leave before dawn in a 4x4 with a driver-guide, with lodge or camp stays arranged by our team.
Beach Days, Sailing and the Reef
The beach itself is the reason most travellers come. Swim at high tide, walk the flats and tide pools at low tide, sail a traditional ngalawa canoe with a local fisherman, or kitesurf at Galu when the wind blows. Glass-bottom boats visit the reef, and skydiving over the beach is possible in the drier months. We arrange sailing and snorkelling trips with pickups from your hotel.
Neighbourhoods and quarters to know in Diani
Diani Beach Road, Central
The central stretch of the beach road is the heart of Diani, with resort hotels, shopping centres, restaurants, cafés and the colobus rope bridges overhead. The beach here is wide and well tended, and everything is within a short tuk-tuk ride. It is the most convenient choice for first-time visitors and families.
Galu and Kinondo
South of the centre, Galu and Kinondo are quieter, with villas, small boutique hotels and a wider, wilder beach where the kitesurfers gather. The sacred kaya forest is nearby and the road south leads to Shimoni and the marine park. Choose it for peace, long walks on the sand and a slower pace.
Tiwi
North of Diani, beyond the Kongo River, Tiwi is a low-key beach of coral coves, tide pools and small lodges, popular with travellers who prefer a village atmosphere to large resorts. It is a short drive from Diani's restaurants and about half an hour closer to Mombasa, which shortens the airport transfer.
Ukunda
A few minutes inland from the beach, Ukunda is the local town with the airstrip, the market, mosques, pharmacies and everyday shops. It is where the matatus run and where our drivers refuel. Staying here is unusual, but visiting its market with a guide gives a real taste of coastal life away from the hotels.
How long to stay in Diani and how to pair it
Recommended stay
We recommend four to five nights in Diani. One full day goes to Wasini Island and the marine park, a half day to Shimba Hills or the colobus and Kongo Mosque, and the rest to the beach, the reef and a dhow at sunset. With six or seven nights, add an overnight safari in Tsavo East or a day in Mombasa's Old Town.
How to pair it
Diani pairs naturally with Mombasa, about an hour and a half north by the Likoni ferry or the Dongo Kundu bypass, for Fort Jesus and the Old Town. A seven-day trip combines Nairobi, a Masai Mara safari and a final stretch in Diani by flight to Ukunda. In ten days, add Naivasha or Amboseli. Fourteen days can continue to Watamu or across to Zanzibar by a short flight.
Best time to visit Diani and the rhythm of the day
Best months
The best time to visit Diani is from December to March, when days are hot, sunny and calm, and from July to October, which is cooler and breezier with good kitesurfing winds. The long rains fall from April to June, with some hotels closing in May. Seaweed can wash up at times depending on the season and currents, which hotels clear from the beach each morning.
The daily rhythm
Diani days follow the tide. Mornings are for swimming or snorkelling when the water is high, or for an early departure to Shimoni or Shimba Hills. Lunch is long and shaded, often grilled fish or coconut curry. Afternoons bring low-tide walks, a sail or a rest by the pool, and evenings end with a dhow on the water or dinner at a beachfront restaurant.
On-the-ground logistics in Diani
Arrival
Ukunda airstrip (UKA) is just a few minutes from the Diani hotels and receives flights from Nairobi and the Masai Mara. Moi International Airport in Mombasa (MBA) is about an hour and a half away by road via the Likoni ferry or the newer Dongo Kundu bypass, which avoids the ferry queues. Our private airport transfers meet you at either and take you straight to your hotel.
Getting around
Diani's beach road runs the length of the resort area, and tuk-tuks, boda-boda motorbikes and licensed taxis are everywhere and inexpensive for short hops. The beach itself is a lovely way to move between hotels on foot at low tide. For Shimoni, Shimba Hills, Mombasa and Tsavo, a private car with driver arranged by our team is the most comfortable option.
Local etiquette tip
Diani's villages are largely Muslim Digo communities, so keep swimwear to the beach and pool and dress modestly in Ukunda, at the Kongo Mosque and in the sacred forests, where a guide from the community is required. Beach sellers can be persistent; a polite, firm no works. Ask before photographing people, tip guides and boat crews, and remember that plastic bags are banned in Kenya.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask most about Diani.
Where should first-time visitors stay in Diani?
First-time visitors usually stay on the central stretch of the beach road, where resort hotels, restaurants and shops are close and the beach is wide. Galu and Kinondo to the south suit couples and travellers seeking quiet. Our team suggests a hotel to match your style and arranges your private transfer from Ukunda or Mombasa.
Can Diani be done as a day trip, or does it need an overnight stay?
Diani can be visited for a day from Mombasa, but it deserves far more. The beach, the Wasini dolphin trip, Shimba Hills and the colobus forests each need their own day, so four or five nights are ideal. We arrange flights to Ukunda, private transfers and guided day tours to fit your schedule.
What is the dress code and etiquette in Diani?
On the beach and at the pool, swimwear is fine. In Ukunda town, at the Kongo Mosque and in the villages, cover shoulders and knees out of respect for the local Muslim community. Ask before photographing people and fishermen, tip boat crews and guides modestly, and follow your community guide's instructions in the sacred forests.
Is Diani tourist friendly?
Yes. Diani has been Kenya's leading beach resort for decades, with hotels, restaurants, dive centres and guides used to visitors from around the world. English and Swahili are widely spoken, halal food is easy to find, and the airstrip makes arrival simple. Beach sellers can be persistent, but a polite refusal is always respected.
Is it safe to travel to Diani now?
Diani is generally safe for visitors. Hotels have security, the beach is patrolled by day, and the main precautions are not walking on dark beaches at night and keeping valuables locked away. Take malaria precautions as advised by your doctor, check your government's travel advice before departure, and keep our WhatsApp line handy during your stay.
What are the must-do things in Diani?
The must-do things in Diani include the Wasini Island and Kisite marine park dhow trip, Shimba Hills, the colobus monkeys and the Kongo Mosque, a sail in an outrigger canoe, low-tide walks on the reef and a Tsavo East safari. Our guided day tours combine these with pickups from your hotel.
How many days do you need in Diani?
Four or five days are ideal for Diani: one for Wasini and the marine park, a half day for Shimba Hills or the colobus and mosque, and the rest for the beach and reef. Six or seven days add an overnight safari in Tsavo East or a day in Mombasa's Old Town, all arranged by our team.

Each has its own page, and the WhatsApp desk combines any of them into one plan with one written price.
How do I get from the airport to my hotel in Diani?
Moi International Airport (MBA) is at Port Reitz on the mainland about 12 km west of Mombasa Island, 30 to 50 minutes by car over the Makupa Causeway, about 6 km from the Madaraka Express terminus at Miritini; Nyali is about 15 km, Bamburi and Shanzu about 25 km, Diani about 1 hour 30 minutes by the Dongo Kundu bypass and Watamu about 110 km and 2 hours 30 minutes up the coast road. Our private transfer meets you at arrivals with a name board, tracks your flight and takes you door to door at a fixed price for the whole vehicle; the transfer pages list every route.
Is there public transport from the airport to Diani?
Diani has no rail link; tuk-tuks and matatus run along Diani Beach Road, the Likoni ferry and the Dongo Kundu bypass connect the south coast with Mombasa, and short flights land at Ukunda Airstrip from Nairobi. A private car is the simplest choice with luggage for the long run from Moi International Airport, for a night arrival or for a day trip to Shimba Hills or Wasini. With luggage, a family or a late flight, the private car is the simpler choice.
Which tours are available in Diani?
Among them: Wasini Island & Kisite Marine Park Dhow Trip from Diani, Kongo River Mangrove Sunset Canoe Tour, Diani, Private African Pool Snorkelling Tour at Tiwi Beach, Diani and Private Tsavo East 2-Day Safari from Diani. Each page says whether the day is private or small-group, what it includes and how long it lasts.
Are the tours private or in a group?
Both exist, and each tour page says which. A private tour has a vehicle and guide for your party alone; the desk can make most group tours private on request.
How do I book?
Fill in the form on any page or message us on WhatsApp with the date, the number of travellers and the hotel. A member of our team confirms the price and the details in writing within minutes.
Are the prices fixed?
Yes - every price is agreed in writing on WhatsApp before you travel and does not change on the day.
Do the drivers and guides speak Arabic or English?
It depends on the city and the day, so we do not promise a particular language; tell us your preference and we do our best. The WhatsApp desk always works in Arabic and English.
Can I change or cancel a booking in Diani?
Yes, in the same WhatsApp conversation. The terms depend on the product and on how close to the date the change comes; the desk states them before you pay.
