Private African Pool Snorkelling Tour at Tiwi Beach, Diani
4.8 (66 reviews) from travellers who booked this experience
Overview
The African Pool is one of the small wonders of the Kenyan south coast: a natural pool in the coral reef at Tiwi Beach, just north of Diani, whose outline looks like the map of the African continent when the tide goes out. On this private three-hour tour your own guide meets you in Diani Beach, drives you to Tiwi, walks you across the exposed reef flat at low tide and takes you snorkelling inside the pool, where the sea has left behind reef fish, starfish and sea urchins in water that is calm and clear. The timing follows the tide, so the start is set for the day you book. It suits families, couples and friends who want an unusual, easy swim with a guide who knows every rock.

Full Description
Tiwi Beach: the quiet coast north of Diani
Tiwi Beach lies immediately north of Diani, separated from it by the mouth of the Kongo River, and feels like a different world: no big hotels, a low coral cliff backing the sand, palm-roofed cottages and fishermen pulling nets. It is about twenty minutes by road from central Diani Beach, which is why our guide drives you there rather than leaving you to work out how to get to Tiwi Beach by matatu or tuk-tuk.
The sand here is coarser and the reef sits close to shore, so at low tide a wide platform of coral rock and shallow pools is exposed for a couple of hours. This is when Tiwi is at its most interesting and when the African Pool appears. Our private tour to the African Pool at Tiwi starts in Diani, so the transfer, the reef walk and the swim all fit into one easy three-hour outing.
The African Pool: a map of the continent in the reef
Walk out across the reef flat and, a few hundred metres from the beach, the rock opens into a deep, sheltered pool whose edges trace the familiar outline of Africa, with a bulge for West Africa, a horn in the east and a tapering south. The pool was carved by the sea over thousands of years, and at low tide its surface is flat and glassy while the surf breaks harmlessly on the outer reef beyond it.
The pool is roughly waist to chest deep at the edges and deeper in the middle, with sandy patches and coral ledges where fish hide. Because the water is cut off from the open sea for a few hours, it warms slightly and stays very clear, which makes the African Pool a favourite spot for people who find open-water snorkelling intimidating. Many visitors ask whether the African Pool is worth visiting: for an hour of calm, easy snorkelling, it absolutely is.
Snorkelling in the pool
Once the guide has shown you the safest way in, you float over a miniature reef. Expect schools of damselfish and sergeant majors, juvenile parrotfish and wrasse, blennies peering from holes, the occasional moray eel and plenty of sea urchins and starfish on the bottom. Small anemones, soft corals and seaweed gardens cover the ledges, and crabs scuttle along the rim of the pool between the waves.
Masks, snorkels and foot-protection shoes are provided, which matters because the reef rock and urchin spines are sharp. The guide stays in the water with you, points out what you are looking at and keeps an eye on the tide. You usually have about an hour in the pool before the sea starts to return and the walk back to the beach begins, which is why the start time is fixed to the tide on the day.
The reef walk and the rhythm of the tide
The African Pool can only be reached on foot at low tide, so the whole tour is built around the tide table. Low tide on the Kenyan coast shifts by roughly fifty minutes each day, which is why this tour is offered with a morning or an early-afternoon start and we confirm the exact time when you book. At spring tides around the full and new moon the reef is most exposed and the pool at its clearest.
The walk from the beach to the pool takes fifteen to twenty minutes over uneven coral rock and shallow channels, and the guide chooses a route through the easiest sections. Along the way you will see tide pools with hermit crabs, brittle stars, sea cucumbers and cowrie shells. Wear the reef shoes we provide, take only photographs and let the guide handle any marine creature you want a closer look at.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private tour?
It is fully private: your own guide, your own party in the vehicle and nobody else joining you in the pool. That makes it easy to go at the pace of children, nervous swimmers or keen photographers.
Can we change the itinerary or the pace?
The start time is fixed by the tide, but everything else is flexible: spend longer in the pool, explore more tide pools or cut the walk short if someone is tired. Just tell your guide.
How many people can join?
The tour is designed for small parties, typically two to six people, so the guide can stay close to everyone in the water. Larger families or groups can be split across two guides; ask us when booking.
Is the price per person or per group?
The private tour is priced for the group rather than per person, so it works well for families and friends travelling together. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.
Is hotel pickup included?
Transport is included from the Diani Beach meeting point to Tiwi and back. Hotel pickup within Diani can often be arranged on request; tell us where you are staying and we will confirm.
What is included?
Your private guide, transport between the Diani meeting point and Tiwi Beach, the pool access fee, snorkelling equipment and protective reef shoes.
How long is the tour?
About three hours in total, including the transfers, the reef walk and roughly an hour of snorkelling in the pool.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
No. The pool is calm, enclosed and partly shallow, and the guide stays with you in the water. Non-swimmers can paddle at the edge and watch the fish from the rim.
Is it suitable for children and people with reduced mobility?
Children from about five years old love the pool, especially with a parent beside them. The walk across the reef is on uneven, slippery rock, so the tour is not suitable for wheelchair users or anyone unsteady on their feet.
What should I bring?
Swimwear, a towel, a hat, sunscreen, water, a dry bag or pouch for your phone, and a change of clothes for the drive back. Reef shoes and masks are provided.
When is the best time to visit the African Pool?
Any low tide works, but spring tides around the full and new moon expose the reef most and give the clearest water. The calmest sea conditions are from October to March.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose your date in the booking panel and send your request; our team confirms availability and the tide-based start time on WhatsApp within minutes.
