Full Description
Tsavo East National Park: Kenya's largest wilderness
Tsavo East was gazetted in 1948 and covers about 13,700 square kilometres of semi-arid bush, open savannah and riverine forest east of the Mombasa to Nairobi highway, making it the largest national park in Kenya. Together with Tsavo West it forms one of the biggest protected areas in the world. The landscape is flatter and more open than the western park, which makes spotting animals easier, and the southern section near Voi is where most visitors from the coast concentrate.
From Diani the drive to the Bachuma gate takes roughly three to four hours, so a two-day Tsavo East safari from Diani gives far more time in the park than a day trip. The park is known for large herds of elephants, lions that still roam the plains, and strong populations of buffalo, giraffe, zebra, eland, lesser kudu and the long-necked gerenuk, along with ostriches and hundreds of bird species.
The red elephants of Tsavo
The elephants of Tsavo look unlike any others in Africa. They dust-bathe and wallow in the park's fine red soil, rich in iron oxide, and emerge the colour of terracotta. Tsavo holds the largest single elephant population in Kenya, numbering in the thousands, and family groups are seen at waterholes, under acacia trees and crossing the red tracks in front of the vehicle, especially in the dry months when they gather near permanent water.
Your driver-guide knows the waterholes and river bends where herds come to drink and will switch off the engine so you can watch quietly from under the pop-up roof. Tsavo is also where researchers follow some of Africa's last big-tusked bulls, and seeing one at close range is often the highlight of a private Tsavo East safari. As with all wildlife, sightings are never guaranteed, but elephants are seen on nearly every drive.
The Galana River and Lugard Falls
The Galana River flows across the park from west to east, lined by doum palms and tamarind trees, and is the lifeline of Tsavo East in the dry season. Its banks draw elephants, buffalo and waterbuck, hippos and crocodiles lie in the pools, and lions often rest in the shade of the riverine thicket. A morning drive along the Galana is the best way to see the park waking up, with the light low and the animals active before the heat.
Lugard Falls is not a tall waterfall but a series of rapids where the river squeezes through a channel of sculpted white rock, carving smooth potholes and shapes over thousands of years. You can leave the vehicle here under the guide's supervision and walk a short way along the rocks; crocodiles bask in the pools below, so the guide keeps you at a safe distance. It is one of the most photographed spots in the park.
Mudanda Rock, Aruba Dam and the Yatta Plateau
Mudanda Rock is a long whale-backed outcrop near the Voi gate, about a kilometre and a half in length, which collects rainwater in a natural dam at its base. In the dry season this is one of the best places in Tsavo East to sit and watch: elephants, buffalo and antelope come to drink below while you look down from the rock. Aruba Dam, built across the Voi River in the 1950s, is another magnet for game and for waterbirds.
On the northern horizon runs the Yatta Plateau, the world's longest lava flow, stretching about 290 kilometres along the western edge of the Galana. These landmarks structure the game drives on this safari: the guide links waterholes, river crossings and viewpoints so that each drive covers new ground. Ask about the best time to visit Tsavo East and most guides will say the dry months from June to October and January to February, when animals gather at water.
Your overnight near Voi
Day one ends at a safari lodge on the edge of the park near Voi, where rooms look out over the bush and a floodlit waterhole draws elephants, buffalo and sometimes lions after dark. Dinner and breakfast are served at the lodge, and the evening is yours to sit on the terrace listening to the sounds of the savannah. Lunch and dinner on day one and breakfast on day two are included; other drinks and snacks are paid locally.
Spending the night is what separates this trip from a day safari: you are inside the ecosystem for the golden hours at dusk and dawn, when predators move and the light is best. The vehicle stays with you, so after breakfast you leave on a sunrise game drive before most day visitors have reached the gate. Lodge choice is confirmed at booking and may vary with availability, always at a similar standard.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private tour?
It is a private safari. The vehicle, the driver-guide and the game-drive plan are for your party only, so you decide when to stop and how long to stay at each sighting.
Can we change the itinerary or the pace?
Yes. Within park opening hours and lodge meal times, your guide can start earlier, stay longer at the river or skip a stop. Tell us at booking if you have particular wishes, such as more time at the waterholes.
How many people fit in the vehicle?
The standard safari van seats up to seven guests with window seats for everyone and a pop-up roof. A four-wheel-drive safari jeep is available as a separate option for those who prefer it.
Is the price per person or per group?
The safari is priced per person, with adult and child rates, and the vehicle is private to your party. Three options are listed: the default with park fees in a safari van, a four-wheel-drive jeep, and a version without park fees for guests who prefer to pay them at the gate. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes, pickup and drop-off at your hotel in Diani or Mombasa are included. Airport and port pickups can be arranged on request.
What is included?
Private pop-up-roof safari vehicle and English-speaking driver-guide, Tsavo East park entry fees (default option), one night at a safari lodge near Voi, lunch and dinner on day one, breakfast on day two, all game drives and bottled water.
How long is the safari?
Two days and one night. You leave the coast early on day one and are usually back at your hotel by mid to late afternoon on day two.
Which animals can we expect to see?
Elephants are seen on almost every drive, and lions, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, warthogs, antelopes and ostriches are common. Leopards, cheetahs and rhinos are rare. All sightings depend on luck, season and the animals themselves.
Is it suitable for children and people with reduced mobility?
Children from three years old are welcome and a private vehicle makes it easy to adapt the day to them. Guests with reduced mobility can enjoy the safari from the vehicle, but the park roads are bumpy and the lodge may have steps; tell us your needs and we will advise.
What should I bring?
Passport, a small overnight bag, neutral clothes, a warm layer for early mornings, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars, camera and any personal medication.
When is the best time to visit Tsavo East?
The dry months from June to October and January to February concentrate animals around rivers and waterholes. After the rains in April to May and November the park is green and beautiful but animals are more spread out.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose your date and option in the booking panel and send your request; our team confirms availability and the lodge on WhatsApp within minutes and sends your pickup time the day before.
