You cruise along the coast, look for seabirds and sea caves, then slip into the water with a mask, snorkel and life jacket to swim among reef fish. The trip lasts about three and a half hours with morning and early-afternoon departures, so it fits easily around a beach day. It suits couples, families and first-time snorkellers.

Full Description
Los Arcos National Marine Park
Los Arcos is a small marine park of rocky islands that rise from the sea a few kilometres off the coast near Mismaloya, south of Puerto Vallarta. Waves and wind have carved the granite into arches, which give the park its name and make it one of the most recognisable sights in Banderas Bay. A Los Arcos Islands boat tour is a popular first excursion for visitors who want to see wildlife without a long day out.
Because the area is protected, the water is clearer and the fish are more numerous than at busy town beaches. Seabirds rest on the ledges, and your guide explains the rules of the park and the species you may see, so the visit is as educational as it is scenic.
Snorkelling at Los Arcos
The main stop is a snorkelling spot in the shelter of the islands, where the water is calm enough for beginners. Over the rocks you can see schools of reef fish, colourful parrotfish and, with luck, a turtle or a ray gliding by. Snorkelling gear and a life jacket are included, so you only need swimwear and a towel.
Is Los Arcos good for snorkelling? Yes, especially on calm mornings when visibility is best. The dry season from November to May usually brings the clearest water, while in summer rain can reduce visibility for a day or two. Stay with your guide and respect the no-touch rule for corals and marine life.
Sea caves and coastline views
Between stops the boat moves slowly along the cliffs, so you can look into small caves and watch waves break against the rocks. The shoreline here is steep and green, with the hills of the Sierra Madre behind it, and the views back towards Puerto Vallarta are a highlight of the trip.
Dolphins sometimes follow the boat, and from December to March humpback whales visit Banderas Bay, so keep your camera ready. Sightings are never guaranteed, but the guide will point out anything in the water along the route.
Planning your Los Arcos boat trip
Departures are in the morning and early afternoon, and the whole trip lasts about three and a half hours. Morning trips tend to have the calmest sea; afternoon trips are warmer and a little breezier. Check the booking panel for the times offered on your date. Hotel pickup is not included, so you meet your group at a point in Puerto Vallarta confirmed after booking.
Wear swimwear under light clothes, bring a towel, a hat and reef-safe sunscreen, and take a waterproof bag for your phone. Food and drinks are not included. If the sea is rough, the operator may change the route or timing for safety, and the guide will explain any adjustment.
