Full Description
Banderas Bay and the humpback whales
Banderas Bay is one of the largest bays in Mexico and a winter refuge for humpback whales. From December to March they arrive from colder northern waters to mate and give birth in the warm, sheltered sea, and they can be seen breaching, slapping their tails and swimming alongside their calves. A whale watching cruise in Puerto Vallarta is the most popular wildlife trip of the winter for good reason.
The guide and captain search for the best viewing areas and keep a respectful distance, following the rules that protect the whales. Sightings are very likely in peak season, usually January and February, but they are never guaranteed. Dolphins, turtles and seabirds often appear on the route too.
The sunset cruise on a mega yacht
Travelling on a large yacht makes the afternoon comfortable: there is shade, seating and open deck space for photos, and the larger hull is more stable than a small boat. The cruise lasts three hours, leaving in the afternoon so that the best light for whales is followed by the colours of sunset.
When the sun sets, the bay turns orange and pink, and the sea is usually calm enough to simply relax and enjoy the view. Sunset times change through the year, so the guide will adjust the route to be on the water for the best moment. Bring a light jacket, as the evening breeze can feel cool.
Paradise Village and Nuevo Vallarta
The default check-in is at Paradise Village in Nuevo Vallarta, on the northern shore of the bay. It is a quiet marina district with canals, beaches and resorts, usually under half an hour from the main hotel zone of Puerto Vallarta by taxi, depending on traffic. Many travellers search for how to get to Paradise Village before booking, and a taxi or private transfer is the easiest way.
Hotel pickup is not included, so please plan your journey to the check-in point and allow extra time in the afternoon traffic. Arrive 15 to 30 minutes early for check-in, and keep your confirmation handy.
Puerto Mágico cruise terminal
The second option checks in at the Puerto Mágico cruise ship terminal, in the port area of Puerto Vallarta. Choose it if you are staying in the city, near the port or arriving from a cruise, because it avoids the longer journey to Nuevo Vallarta.
The cruise itself is the same: same duration, same yacht style and the same whale watching and sunset on Banderas Bay. Compare the check-in point and times in the booking panel before you confirm your date.
