Full Description
The Essaouira medina and its UNESCO status
Essaouira is a small coastal town on Morocco's Atlantic shore, about three hours' drive west of Marrakech, and its old medina has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. The town was laid out in the 18th century on a planned grid, with straight lanes, whitewashed walls and blue shutters, which makes it easy to explore on foot and very different from the maze of Marrakech.
Many visitors want to know if an Essaouira day trip from Marrakech is worth it, and the answer is yes: the sea air is cool, the pace is relaxed and the souks are calmer. Look for thuya wood workshops, art galleries, spice stalls and small cafes, and take your time in the medina's main square.
The fishing port and the seafront ramparts
The fishing port is the liveliest corner of Essaouira, with blue wooden boats, fishermen mending nets and seagulls circling above the quay. Boats are still built in the harbour yard, and the grilled fish stalls and restaurants near the port are popular places for a seafood lunch. The ramparts above the port give wide views of the ocean and the island of Mogador.
The Skala, the old sea fortification, has rows of historic cannons pointing at the Atlantic and is a favourite place at golden hour. If you search for things to do in Essaouira, the ramparts and the port are always on the list, and you can see both comfortably in the free time of this trip.
The beach, the wind and the best time to visit
Essaouira has a long sandy beach that begins just outside the walls. The Atlantic wind blows most of the year, which is why the town is famous for kitesurfing and windsurfing, and the water is cool even in summer. A walk on the sand, or a stop at a beach cafe, is a good way to spend the free time.
The best time to visit Essaouira from Marrakech is spring and autumn, when the weather is warm without being hot. In summer the coast is a welcome escape from the heat inland, but bring a light jacket for the wind, and in winter the town is quieter with cooler air.
The argan cooperative and the drive from Marrakech
On the road to Essaouira we stop at an argan oil cooperative, where women crack, grind and press the argan nuts by hand. Argan trees grow in the coastal region of south-west Morocco, and the oil is used in cooking and cosmetics. The visit is short and there is no obligation to buy.
There is also a breakfast stop about an hour and a half after leaving Marrakech, with views of the countryside. Pickup starts from about 07:15 and the return reaches Marrakech between about 19:00 and 20:00, depending on traffic. If you prefer to stay the night in Essaouira, tell us in advance and we can arrange for your luggage.
