Full Description

The Tizi n'Tichka Pass and the High Atlas road

The route leaves Marrakech and climbs through the High Atlas along the Tizi n'Tichka Pass, one of the highest road passes in Morocco, at around 2,260 metres. The road twists past red villages, pine slopes and viewpoints, and we stop at a break point near Ait Barka mountain so you can stretch your legs and take photos.

Travellers often ask how long it takes to drive from Marrakech to Ait Benhaddou: it is about four hours each way in good conditions, and road works can lengthen the trip. That is why this is a long day of around 11 hours, and why a comfortable vehicle and a driver who knows the road are part of the experience.

Kasbah Ait Benhaddou

Ait Benhaddou is the best-preserved ksar in southern Morocco, a fortified village of earthen houses, towers and courtyards that rises up a hill above the Ounila river. It has been listed by UNESCO since 1987 and was once a stop on the caravan route linking the Sahara with Marrakech.

With a local guide you cross the river bed, climb the narrow lanes and learn how the clay is built and repaired, who lives here today and what the old merchants' houses looked like. The view from the top over the valley and palm groves is the best reward. The climb is on uneven stones, so this tour is not recommended for visitors with difficulty walking.

Ouarzazate, the gateway to the desert

Ouarzazate is a calm town on the edge of the pre-Saharan plain, often described as the door of the desert. The landscape is open and dry, with the Atlas behind you and reddish plains in front, and the town is known for its film studios, where many productions are shot because of the light and the scenery.

On this tour you visit Ouarzazate on the way, with time for a break. The entry fee for the studios is not included and is paid locally if you want to go inside. Many guests prefer to use the time for a photo stop and a relaxed lunch, which is also paid on the spot.

Is this day trip worth it?

If you ask whether a day trip from Marrakech to Ait Benhaddou and Ouarzazate is worth it, the answer depends on your time: it is a long day, but you see the Atlas pass, a UNESCO site and the start of the desert in one go, and you do not have to carry your luggage. For a deeper desert experience, a multi-day tour to Merzouga is the next step.

Pickup is around 07:00, and the exact time and place are confirmed the evening before. The best time to visit Ait Benhaddou is spring or autumn, when the days are warm and clear, and summer midday is very hot, so bring a hat and water.
