Full Description
Marina Bandar Al Rowdha and Muscat from the sea
Your trip starts at Marina Bandar Al Rowdha, a sheltered harbour tucked into the mountains on the coast road between Old Muscat and the bays of Al Bustan and Qantab. Fishing boats, dive boats and sailing yachts share its quays, and the bare, dark rock of the Hajar Mountains drops straight into the sea around it, so the scenery is dramatic from the moment you leave the jetty.
How to get to Marina Bandar Al Rowdha? It is about 15 minutes by road from Muttrah and around 30 to 40 minutes from the hotels near the airport, which is why the default option includes our hotel pickup and drop-off. If you prefer to drive, the meet-at-the-marina option has car parking on site. Arrive relaxed: boarding is calm, the crew gives a short safety briefing, and then the boat heads out along the coast.
Dolphin watching in the Sea of Oman
The waters off Muscat are among the best places in the region to see dolphins in the wild. Spinner dolphins, famous for leaping and twisting in the air, often travel in large pods, and common and bottlenose dolphins are regularly seen too; with luck you may spot a sea turtle or a shoal of flying fish. The captain watches for splashes and seabirds and approaches slowly so the dolphins can swim alongside the bow on their own terms.
Is dolphin watching in Muscat worth it? For most guests the sight of dozens of dolphins playing in the bow wave is the highlight of their trip to Oman. Sightings are very frequent, although dolphins are wild animals and nothing can be guaranteed. The best time for a Muscat dolphin watching tour is from October to April, when the sea is usually calmer and mornings are pleasant.
Snorkelling along the Muscat coast
After the dolphin search the boat anchors in a sheltered bay or beside a rocky island where the water is clear and calm. The crew chooses the spot on the day depending on the wind and the sea, often along the coves between Muscat and Bandar Al Khayran or around the islands near the capital. Here the rocks and patches of coral shelter parrotfish, angelfish, butterflyfish, surgeonfish and sometimes turtles or small reef sharks resting on the sand.
Snorkelling in Muscat is easy for beginners: the instructor hands out masks, snorkels and fins, explains how to use them and stays nearby in the water. Confident swimmers can explore along the reef edge, while families can float in the shallower parts. You spend roughly 45 minutes to an hour at the snorkelling stop, then dry off on deck with snacks and a cold soft drink.
Before or after your trip: Muttrah and Old Muscat
Because the boat leaves in the morning and returns around midday, the rest of the day is free to explore the city. A short drive away, the Muttrah Corniche curves along the harbour with its colourful merchant houses, the old Muttrah Souq with frankincense, silver and textiles, and the Muttrah Fort on the hill above. Old Muscat, with the ceremonial Al Alam Palace and the twin Portuguese-era forts of Al Jalali and Al Mirani, is only minutes from the marina.
Cruise passengers docking at Sultan Qaboos Port in Muttrah are picked up directly at the port, so the trip fits easily into a day ashore; please share your ship's name and all-aboard time with us when booking. The Royal Opera House Muscat and the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque are also good additions on another day of your stay.
