Full Description
Seeb Port and the crossing from Muscat
Your trip starts at the marina of Seeb Port, in Al Seeb, the coastal district of Muscat known for its fishing harbour, fish market and long sandy beaches, not far from Muscat International Airport. You check in at the dive centre office 20 to 30 minutes before departure for fitting of masks and fins, and free parking is available at the marina.
The boat then heads out across the Sea of Oman towards the islands, which lie roughly 18 kilometres offshore. The crossing takes around 45 minutes to an hour, with views back to the Hajar Mountains rising behind the coast. If you are wondering how to get to the Daymaniat Islands, a licensed boat trip like this is the only way, as the reserve has no regular ferry. Dolphins are sometimes seen on the way, an extra highlight when they appear.
Daymaniat Islands Nature Reserve
The Daymaniat Islands, also spelled Dimaniyat, are a chain of nine small limestone islands grouped into eastern, central and western clusters off the coast between Seeb and Barka. They were declared a nature reserve in 1996 and remain uninhabited, protected for their coral reefs, nesting sea turtles and seabirds such as ospreys and terns.
The rugged islands, with pale cliffs and small white beaches, look striking against the turquoise water. Rules are strict to protect wildlife: fishing and touching marine life are not allowed, and from May to October beach landings are restricted while turtles and birds nest. Is a Daymaniat Islands trip worth it? For many visitors to Muscat it is the best day on the water in Oman, combining clear water, abundant marine life and a sense of untouched nature.
Coral reefs, turtles and reef fish
The heart of the trip is snorkelling. Your guide chooses several spots according to the season, currents and visibility, and the boat anchors over shallow reefs where hard and soft corals grow close to the surface. Life jackets and floating aids are provided and are required for children and non-swimmers in the water.
Green and hawksbill turtles are regularly seen grazing or gliding past, and the reefs are full of parrotfish, butterflyfish, angelfish, anemonefish, schools of snappers and the occasional moray eel or harmless blacktip reef shark. Visibility is often excellent, and the water is warm for most of the year. Between dives you can relax in the shade of the boat. Daymaniat Islands snorkelling is suitable for confident beginners, and the guide stays close to help anyone who needs it.
Island beach stop and brunch on board
Between 1 November and 30 April the boat can stop at one of the island beaches, where you can stretch out on the white sand, swim from the shore and, if you wish, climb a short way up the rocks for a panoramic view over the reserve. From May to October beach access is restricted to protect nesting wildlife, but snorkelling from the boat continues as normal.
During the trip a brunch of sandwiches and snacks is served with soft drinks and water. Food in Oman is halal, and vegetarian options are standard; if you need gluten-free, vegan or allergy-friendly food, please tell us at least 24 hours before your trip. Bring your own towel, as towels are not included, and a waterproof bag for your phone and valuables.
When to go and how to prepare
The best time to visit the Daymaniat Islands is from October to May, when air temperatures are pleasant, the sea is usually calm and beach access is open from November. Summer trips are possible too, with very warm water, though the midday heat is intense, so the morning departure at 08:15 is often the most comfortable choice, while the 13:30 departure suits late risers.
Bring swimwear, a towel, reef-friendly sunscreen and a waterproof bag. In the marina and other public areas, please wear a T-shirt and shorts or a cover-up over your swimwear out of respect for local customs. The trip returns to Seeb Port about 4.5 hours after departure. If you prefer a shorter crossing of about 30 minutes, choose the option from Almouj Marina in the booking panel.
