Full Description
The coastal road from Muscat
Your day begins with pickup from your hotel in Muscat, 30 to 60 minutes before the 08:00 start, in a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle. The route follows the modern coastal highway south-east towards Sur, with the rugged Hajar Mountains on one side and glimpses of the Sea of Oman on the other, passing villages, date plantations and wide gravel plains.
Wadi Shab lies about 140 kilometres from the capital, roughly two hours by road. Along the way there is an optional short break at a local coffee shop to try a cup of Omani tea, at a small extra cost. If you are wondering how to get to Wadi Shab without a car, a Wadi Shab day trip from Muscat like this one is the easiest way, as public transport along this coast is limited.
Wadi Shab: the boat crossing and the canyon hike
Wadi Shab, near the village of Tiwi in Ash Sharqiyah, is one of the most beautiful valleys in Oman. At its mouth, beneath a highway bridge, a small boat carries you across the river lagoon in a few minutes to the start of the trail. From here the canyon narrows between towering limestone walls, and the path winds past date palms, banana groves and old falaj channels that have carried water to the plantations for generations.
The hike to the pools takes about 40 minutes each way, over rocks and gravel with some uneven sections and short climbs. Your guide sets a steady pace, points out the irrigation system and helps you on the trickier parts. Is Wadi Shab worth visiting? The contrast of emerald water, green palms and sheer rock walls makes it one of the most photographed places in the country.
The turquoise pools and the cave waterfall
At the end of the trail a chain of turquoise pools fills the canyon. This is where you swim: the water is fresh and clear, and the last pools lead to the famous cave waterfall. To reach it you swim through a narrow gap in the rock, just wide enough to keep your head above water, and emerge inside a cave where a waterfall pours down from above.
It is the true highlight of the day and an unforgettable moment, but it requires confident swimming, as the cave can only be reached through the water. Life jackets are available as an add-on when booking if you want extra support, and water shoes are strongly recommended for the slippery rocks. Your guide swims with the group and explains the safest route. Afterwards you hike back along the same trail and cross again by boat.
Lunch at a local restaurant
After the hike and swim, the tour stops for lunch at a local restaurant along the coast, a welcome break of about an hour. Food in Oman is halal, and the meal is a chance to try local flavours while you rest and dry off. During the holy month of Ramadan, lunch is not included out of respect for those fasting.
This is also a good moment to ask your guide about life in the Sharqiyah region, the fishing villages along this coast and the old trading town of Sur further south, famous for building wooden dhows. The best time to visit Wadi Shab is from October to April, when temperatures are pleasant for hiking; in summer the heat is intense, so start early and drink plenty of the bottled water provided.
Bimmah Sinkhole at Hawiyat Najm Park
On the way back to Muscat, about 40 minutes from Wadi Shab, you stop at Bimmah Sinkhole, set in Hawiyat Najm Park near the village of Dibab. The name means the hollow of the falling star, after a local legend that a meteorite created it, though geologists explain it as a collapsed limestone cave. The crater is around 20 metres deep and filled with striking blue-green water.
A staircase leads down to the water, where the sea seeps in underground and mixes with fresh water, giving the sinkhole its colour. You have time to swim or simply sit on the rocks while small fish nibble at your feet. The stop lasts about 40 minutes. The drive back to Muscat takes just over an hour, and you are dropped at your hotel at the end of a full and rewarding day.
